Job summary

CMR Surgical in the United Kingdom is seeking a Staff Electronics Engineer to act as technical lead for electronics and embedded systems across the full product lifecycle—from concept to manufacture. About the Role

The Primary Purpose of the Staff Electronics Engineer is to act as a technical lead, providing subject matter expertise in electronics and embedded systems product development to help architect and shape electronics solutions throughout the entire product lifecycle - from concept to manufacture. Where the Staff engineer assimilates line management responsibilities, they are also responsible for the growth, development and day-to-day pastoral care and provide resolution or a path of escalation when issues arise.

This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of 3 days a week being based in the office.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and contribute to the design and development of electronic subsystems across power, digital, analogue, programmable logic and RF technologies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in mechanical, software, systems, test, manufacturing and supply chain to evolve the system architecture and deliver well integrated modular solutions.
  • Mentor and coach electronics engineers, providing guidance on design practices, problem-solving, and technical reviews.
  • Provide technical oversight and review of designs to ensure robustness, reliability and compliance.
  • Support the improvement and refinement of development practices, processes and Quality procedures that ensure consistent, reliable and high-quality outputs.
  • Prepare and review technical documents, including specifications and test plans, that form part of the medical device technical file.
  • Champion best practice as well as improvements to lab facilities, equipment and tools.
  • Support recruitment, training, and retention of electronics engineers.
  • Support the head of electronics in developing and driving a high-performance Electronics Engineering Skills Group
Line Management responsibilities
  • Line management of individual contributors.
  • Ensuring effective communications, through group meetings and regular 1-2-1s
  • Supporting continuous feedback and development of team members, alongside the formal annual appraisal process.
  • Encouraging Participation of reports in departmental operational and process improvement activities alongside project work and team management.

About you
Technical expertise
  • Broad foundation in electronics design with deeper experience in one or more of: - Embedded microprocessors and control systems
  • Motor drive circuits (1–100 A)
  • Low-voltage power supplies (1 V – 240 V, 500 mW – 1 kW)
  • FPGA designs (25–500 MHz)
  • Analogue sensor interfaces (?V to mV)
  • High-speed communications (up to 10 Gbit/s)
  • Experience taking electronic designs from inception through to manufacture
  • Experience with schematic capture and guiding PCB layout through to design outputs.
  • Knowledge of DFx principles, and experience collaborating with electronics manufacturers.
  • Designing for EMC compliance and supporting compliance testing.
  • Familiarity with IEC 60601 or experience working with other safety standards within a regulated industry.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing technical documents in a regulated industry.
  • Experience in robotics, surgical systems, or other safety-critical or high complexity domains would be a bonus.

  • Demonstrated experience of leading technical development in a cross-discipline environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to adapt style for diverse audiences and perspectives.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree or comparable experience in Electronics Engineering.
  • Experience shaping technical architectures and approaches electronics projects within a wider multi-disciplinary programme.
  • Background in a regulated industry (medical devices, aerospace, defence, automotive, etc.)
