Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Mechanical and Electrical Technician. The successful candidate will work at sites across Southwest London, based at Waddon Water Treatment Works in Croydon. The area covers water treatment works, boreholes, reservoirs, water towers, and pumping stations across SW London, ranging from Epsom to Battersea and Addington. The standby rota covers the whole of South and Southeast London.

If successful, you will ensure that all equipment at our sites is running safely and efficiently using proactive and reactive maintenance methods. You will inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify, or repair electrical and mechanical plant equipment.

Working within the maintenance team, you will follow robust planned maintenance, engage in minor installation projects, electrical fault finding, and emergency breakdown repairs to ensure our plant operates year-round.

What you’ll be doing as the Mechanical & Electrical Technician
  1. Carrying out scheduled planned maintenance work on mechanical and electrical equipment in compliance with company procedures to minimize plant breakdowns.
  2. Investigating plant failures and carrying out repairs efficiently to avoid process interruptions, including diagnosing complex faults and repairing during incidents.
  3. Providing technical advice, referring to up-to-date technical knowledge, and supporting technical trainees if required.
  4. Working on equipment such as pumps, control gear, 3-phase motors, starters, electronic control systems like VSDs, automatic valves, measurement instruments, PLCs, and chemical handling equipment.
  5. Participating in a standby rota following relevant training.

Base Location: Waddon - CR0 4HY

Working Pattern: 38 Hours, Monday-Friday 7:30 am – 3:36 pm, plus standby & overtime opportunities

Additional provisions: PPE, tools, and company van are provided.

What you should bring to the role
  • Significant experience with mechanical plant and electrical systems, including pumps, actuated valves, and electronic control systems such as VSDs.
  • Previous experience in an electrical apprenticeship, ONC/HNC in engineering, NVQ, or C&G level 3 in mechanical engineering, with upskill qualification in mechanical NVQ2/3.
  • Experience in inspecting, maintaining, fault diagnosis, testing, installing, modifying, or repairing mechanical and electrical plant equipment safely.
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues.
  • Physical fitness, as work involves confined spaces with restricted access.
  • A valid driving license; all necessary equipment like a vehicle and tools are provided.
