Job summary

Staffbase Recruitment Ltd, in partnership with an established engineering business, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer. You will develop mechanical designs for electrical switchgear, create 3D CAD models and detailed drawings from concept to production, and collaborate with electrical engineers and manufacturing teams.

Responsibilities

• Produce 3D CAD models, assemblies, detailed engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Design mechanical components, electrical switchgear, enclosures and operating mechanisms.
• Develop designs from initial concept through to manufacture, assembly and testing.
• Work closely with electrical engineers to ensure mechanical designs meet functional, safety and installation requirements.
• Liaise with production, quality, testing teams, customers and suppliers to resolve technical and design-related issues.
• Participate in design reviews and support prototype manufacture, assembly and testing activities.
• Maintain accurate engineering drawings, CAD models and technical documentation.
• Manage design activities to meet project deadlines and engineering objectives.
• Identify opportunities for design optimisation and continuous improvement.

Staffbase Recruitment is working in partnership with an established engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of electrical switchgear and associated equipment.

Due to continued business requirements, our client is looking to recruit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join its engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer with strong 3D CAD skills and experience in mechanical design for manufacture to contribute to a range of engineering projects, from initial concept through to production, assembly and testing.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for developing mechanical designs, 3D CAD models, assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings for electrical switchgear, enclosures and associated equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Produce 3D CAD models, assemblies, detailed engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Design mechanical components, electrical switchgear, enclosures and operating mechanisms.
• Develop designs from initial concept through to manufacture, assembly and testing.
• Work closely with electrical engineers to ensure mechanical designs meet functional, safety and installation requirements.
• Liaise with production, quality, testing teams, customers and suppliers to resolve technical and design-related issues.

We are keen to hear from Mechanical Design Engineers with a practical, hands‑on approach to engineering design and a good understanding of design for manufacture.

Ideally, you will have:

• A BEng or BSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Practical experience using 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo or Autodesk Inventor.
• Experience producing detailed engineering drawings, 3D models and assemblies for manufacture.
• A sound understanding of mechanical design principles, engineering tolerances, materials and manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, machining and general manufacturing techniques.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
• A methodical, organised and detail-oriented approach to work.
• Previous experience designing electrical switchgear and associated equipment.
• Knowledge of electrical enclosures, operating mechanisms and sheet metal assemblies.
• Experience supporting prototype development, product testing and manufacturing.
