Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Mechanical Design EngineerAre you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking for an opportunity to take ownership of exciting, bespoke engineering projects from concept through to completion?

We are working with an ambitious and growing engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke automated equipment and engineered solutions for a diverse range of industries, including highly regulated sectors.

Due to continued growth and exciting future plans, they are looking to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their established Design Team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to work on varied projects, contribute to innovative engineering solutions and benefit from a clear pathway for progression into a senior position.

The Role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of mechanical design projects from initial concepts through to detailed engineering drawings, ensuring solutions are robust, cost-effective and suitable for manufacture.

Working closely with internal departments and customers, you will play a key role in developing bespoke machinery, components and assemblies, ensuring projects meet technical, functional and commercial requirements.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Managing mechanical design projects from initial concept through to detailed design and technical drawings.
• Producing 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for mechanical components, assemblies and bespoke industrial equipment.
• Evaluating designs to ensure optimal engineering solutions are achieved in terms of functionality, performance, cost and manufacturability.
• Collaborating with internal engineering, manufacturing and other departments to ensure successful project delivery.
• Liaising with customers to understand technical requirements and communicate design solutions effectively.
• Developing prototypes and supporting testing activities to verify functionality, reliability and performance.
• Researching new technologies, materials and engineering methods to support continuous improvement.
• Producing technical documentation, including design proposals, design risk assessments and equipment manuals.
• Considering the integration of electrical and pneumatic control systems within mechanical designs.

What We're Looking For

To be successful in this Mechanical Design Engineer position, you will have a strong mechanical engineering background and experience designing bespoke machinery or special‑purpose equipment.

You will be comfortable taking ownership of projects, working collaboratively across departments and developing practical engineering solutions that meet customer and manufacturing requirements.

Essential experience and skills:

• A minimum of five years' experience in a Mechanical Design Engineer or similar special‑purpose machinery design role.
• Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and design best practice.
• Experience using 3D CAD software
• An appreciation of electrical and pneumatic control systems and their integration into mechanical designs.
• Experience producing detailed 2D engineering drawings and 3D models.
• A good understanding of design for manufacture, cost optimisation and engineering performance.
• Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to liaise with colleagues and customers.
• Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail.
• A proactive, self‑motivated approach with the ability to manage workloads and take ownership of projects.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience with lifting equipment, pneumatic systems and electrical circuits would be particularly advantageous.
