The role offers career development and a clear path to independent design leadership. The Mechanical Design Engineer will join a busy team, work on standard and custom projects, and report to the Mechanical Design Manager.

Qualifications

• A degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience as a mechanical designer.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials and standards.
• Track record of developing and delivering mechanical products.
• Experience of design for manufacture, tolerance analysis and cost optimisation.
• Strong 3D CAD modelling and simulation skills.
• Excellent communication, teamwork and project management skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop innovative mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production.
• Design and analyse systems using 3D CAD modelling and simulation.
• Manage the development process to meet requirements and timelines.
• Test products and troubleshoot design issues.
• Collaborate with electronic design engineers, project managers and production teams.
• Produce and maintain technical documentation and drawings.
• Mentor and support junior design engineers.

The role

Reporting to the Mechanical Design Manager, you'll join a busy engineering team covering design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, estimating and process improvement. You'll work on a wide variety of standard and custom projects, and the role offers a clear path to becoming an independent designer running your own projects.

Key responsibilities

• Developing innovative mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production
• Designing and analysing systems using 3D CAD modelling and simulation
• Managing the development process to meet requirements and timelines
• Testing products and troubleshooting design issues
• Working closely with electronic design engineers, project managers and production teams
• Producing and maintaining technical documentation and drawings
• Mentoring and supporting junior design engineers

Essential skills and experience

• A degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience as a mechanical designer (ideally in a product-based environment)
• A good understanding of manufacturing processes, materials and standards
• A track record of developing and delivering successful mechanical products
• Experience of design for manufacture, tolerance analysis and cost optimisation
• Strong 3D CAD modelling and simulation skills
• Excellent communication, teamwork and project management skills
