Job summary

RTL Group Ltd in Hemel Hempstead is seeking an experienced Mechanical Construction Manager to lead on-site mechanical installation works for a major commercial project. You will manage day-to-day activity, coordinate subcontractors, and ensure delivery on programme, within budget and to quality standards.

The role requires strong knowledge of HVAC, drainage, and water services, plus RAMS and health and safety compliance.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Mechanical Construction Manager or similar role.
• Experience delivering mechanical packages on commercial construction projects.
• Strong knowledge of HVAC, ventilation, heating, chilled water and drainage.
• Experience managing mechanical subcontractors and coordinating multidisciplinary site teams.
• Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
• Good understanding of UK health and safety legislation, RAMS and site procedures.
• Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
• SMSTS, CSCS and First Aid certifications advantageous or required.

Responsibilities

• Manage and oversee all mechanical installation works during the construction phase.
• Coordinate mechanical subcontractors and site operatives.
• Ensure works align with programmes, specifications, drawings, and design information.
• Monitor progress against the construction programme and identify delays or risks.
• Work with electrical, architectural, structural and other trades to avoid clashes.
• Ensure all mechanical works comply with UK regulations and RAMS.
• Attend site, progress and coordination meetings as required.
• Review technical drawings, installation details and commissioning requirements.
• Manage quality inspections, snagging and defect resolution.
• Monitor labour, materials, plant and equipment to maintain efficient site operations.
• Support commissioning, testing and handover of mechanical systems.
• Maintain accurate site records and report progress and risks to project management.

Job description

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Construction Manager to join a leading construction and building services team, overseeing the mechanical installation works on a major commercial construction project.

This is an excellent opportunity for a driven and technically strong professional with a proven track record in managing mechanical building services installations, coordinating subcontractors, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of mechanical works on site, working closely with the Project Manager, M&E team, main contractor, and other trades to ensure successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and oversee all mechanical installation works throughout the construction phase of the project.
• Coordinate mechanical subcontractors, specialist contractors, and site operatives.
• Ensure works are delivered in line with project programmes, specifications, drawings, and design information.
• Monitor progress against the construction programme and identify potential delays or risks.
• Work closely with electrical, architectural, structural, and other building services teams to ensure effective coordination and avoid clashes.
• Ensure all mechanical works comply with relevant UK regulations, industry standards, and project specifications.
• Maintain high standards of health and safety, ensuring compliance with site procedures and RAMS.
• Attend site meetings, progress meetings, and coordination meetings as required.
• Review technical drawings, installation details, and commissioning requirements.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Mechanical Construction Manager, Mechanical Site Manager, or in a similar building services management role.
• Experience delivering mechanical packages on commercial construction projects.
• Strong technical knowledge of mechanical building services, including HVAC, ventilation, heating, chilled water, domestic water services, and above-ground drainage.
• Experience managing mechanical subcontractors and coordinating multidisciplinary site teams.
• Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Good understanding of UK health and safety legislation, RAMS, and construction site procedures.
• Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver works to programme.
• Relevant mechanical engineering or building services qualifications are desirable.
• SMSTS, CSCS, and First Aid certifications are advantageous or required in line with project requirements.
