Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for a Mechanical Building Services Engineer on a Permanent Basis, based in London

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer to work on our healthcare construction projects. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, delivery, and maintenance of mechanical systems in hospital environments, ensuring compliance with healthcare technical standards and supporting the creation of safe, efficient, and resilient clinical facilities.

Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
  • Develop mechanical building services designs, including HVAC, ventilation, domestic water, medical gases, public health systems, and associated plant.
  • Produce detailed calculations, equipment selections, and technical specifications in line with HTMs, HBNs, CIBSE guidelines, and other healthcare regulations.
  • Coordinate mechanical layouts using BIM/3D modelling tools (e.g., Revit, Navisworks).
Project Delivery
  • Prepare design drawings, reports, schedules, and tender documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (architectural, electrical, clinical planners) to ensure integrated solutions.
  • Support project design reviews, risk assessments, and technical workshops.
Compliance & Quality
  • Ensure all designs meet healthcare engineering requirements, infection control standards, and hospital operational needs.
  • Conduct engineering assessments, surveys, and performance evaluations of existing hospital systems.
  • Provide technical input on energy efficiency, sustainability, and low–carbon initiatives.
Construction Support
  • Review contractor submissions, shop drawings, method statements, and commissioning plans.
  • Attend site meetings, carry out inspections, and provide technical guidance during installation and commissioning stages.
  • Support testing, validation, and handover of mechanical systems for clinical use.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Chartered or working towards Chartered status (CEng) with CIBSE, IMechE, or equivalent (preferred).
  • Proven experience delivering mechanical building services designs for hospitals or other complex healthcare environments.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant standards including HTM (Health Technical Memoranda), HBN (Health Building Notes), and UK building regulations.
  • Proficiency in engineering design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, IES, Hevacomp, or similar.
