Job summary

Associated British Ports (ABP) in Southampton seeks an experienced Mechanical Asset Manager to join the port team. You will bridge project and engineering functions, own asset lifecycle, and drive TotEx plans up to five years for cranes, airbridges, pumping stations and doors.

You will manage asset performance, define lifecycle ownership, and develop IAMPs for critical assets, while coordinating with the Group Technical Authority to embed the Strategic Asset Management Plan.

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in an engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards.
  • Detailed knowledge of external legislation and internal policy requirements.
  • Proven record of strategic planning in asset management.
  • Knowledge/experience of ISO 55000 (2024) is ideal.
  • Experience of portfolio asset management is ideal.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and relational abilities.
  • Strong drive for continuous improvement.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance performance, efficiency and effectiveness of assets across multiple asset types.
  • Define clear lifecycle ownership from procurement to disposal including refurbishment requirements.
  • Monitor asset performance through audits and reviews to increase availability and utilisation.
  • Deliver cost savings through informed asset management decisions.
  • Produce TotEx investment plans (5yr – 1yr) with robust asset knowledge.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with asset management-related laws and policies.
  • Build stakeholder confidence through transparent asset management aligned with objectives.
  • Collaborate with Group Technical Authority to develop and embed a Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP).
  • Develop Individual Asset Management Plans (IAMPs) for assets starting with the most critical.

We're currently looking to recruit an experienced mechanical engineer ideally with experience of managing an extensive asset register to join our Southampton port as a Mechanical Asset Manager. You'll be working in an autonomous role bridging the gap between our project team and engineering team, you should have a solid understanding of asset lifecycle and will be responsible for driving TotEx investment plans (up to 5 years). We have a wide range of Mechanical Assets across the Southampton port, including cranes, airbridges, pumping stations and industrial doors, and the ability to prioritise project and maintenance works is vital.

Accountabilities
  • Enhance the performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of assets to meet organisational strategy, in multiple asset types.
  • Define clear lifecycle asset ownership from procurement to disposal including any refurbishment requirements.
  • Monitor asset performance through internal audits and management reviews to obtain data, to gain increased asset availability, reliability and utilisation.
  • Achieving cost savings through informed asset management decisions, thereby improving the cost-effectiveness of asset ownership.
  • Accountable to produce TotEx (OpEx and CapEx) investment plans (5yr - 1yr), underpinned by robust asset criticality and condition knowledge.
  • Regulatory Compliance: manage and audit compliance with legal, regulatory, and statutory requirements related to asset management.
  • Building confidence among stakeholders through transparent, systematic management of assets in line with organisational objectives and long term asset strategies.
  • Work with Group Technical Authority to develop and embed a Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP)
  • Develop Individual Asset Management Plans (IAMP’s) for assets starting with the most business critical
Skills & Experience

  • Proven record of accomplishment in strategic planning in this area of expertise.
  • Knowledge and experience of ISO 55000 (2024) (Ideal)

  • The job holder needs excellent interpersonal communication and relational abilities. Understands the link between engagement and performance.
  • Strong drive for continuous improvement - never satisfied with the status quo
  • Full UK driving licence
