Lockheed Martin Ampthill in the United Kingdom seeks a Materials Engineer to join the Special Projects team working on materials research and hands-on testing for composites and high-temperature materials for space and aerospace applications.
The role involves developing fabrication procedures for new materials, evaluating material selection, and contributing to testing and documentation within an ISO 9001 environment.
Evaluates technical and economic factors, recommending engineering and manufacturing actions for attainment of design objectives of process or product by applying knowledge of material science and related technologies. Reviews plans for new products and factors, such as strength, weight, and cost to submit material selection recommendations ensuring attainment of design objectives. Plans and implements laboratory operations to develop material and fabrication procedures for new materials to fulfill product cost and performance standards. Confers with producers of materials, such as metals, ceramics, and polymers, during investigation and evaluation of materials suitable for specific product applications.

A talented individual skilled as a Materials Engineer is required to join the Special Projects team at Lockheed Martin, Ampthill. The job will involve a range of materials research activities. We are in need of someone to do hands on materials R&D and possibly some hands-on testing.
Niche skills are required across composites. Composite focus is on Carbon / Silica phenolic composite processing and characterisation. We are also looking into novel technologies for space and aerospace applications so experience in high temperature materials / materials used in hypersonics would be a welcome addition.
