Job summary

A leading credit union is looking for a Marketing Development Officer to drive membership growth and raise community awareness. You will work collaboratively with various stakeholders and utilize your marketing skills to strengthen the Union's presence in the community. This role requires a strong understanding of cooperative movements and effective communication skills. The position is hybrid based in London/Kent, with a full-time commitment.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of Credit Unions and cooperative models.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a relevant role preferred.
  • Hands-on involvement in community groups is desirable.

Role Name

Marketing Development Officer

Key Focus/ Role Purpose

To work with the Team, Management, Board and third parties to support the ongoing success and growth of GBCU, by identifying alternative channels and sourcing new opportunities to grow the membership, services and awareness of the union.

Deputy / CEO

Location

Hybrid – London/Kent (SE and DA post codes predominantly)

Salary Banding / Expenses

Full time 35 hours £35,000

STRATEGY FOR MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND INCREASING AWARENESS

·Actively raise awareness of the Credit Union across the common bond of SE and DA post codes by ensuring that local residents, tenants and residents associations, schools, voluntary organisations, and community groups understand what the Credit Union offers and how they can get involved—from opening a savings account or taking out a loan, to participating in decisions about our role in the local economy and shaping the services we provide.

·Promote the Credit Union as a member-led organisation by encouraging a culture of active participation, where members are seen not just as customers but as co-owners with a voice.

·Strengthen links with other Cooperatives to advocate for cooperative models as a viable, sustainable, and empowering alternative to traditional financial services.

·Engage with wider initiatives aimed at developing the local and regional economy, ensuring the Credit Union contributes meaningfully to inclusive growth.

·Build partnerships with key stakeholders including GCDA (and equivalent organisations), community hubs, voluntary networks, business forums, advice agencies, Local Authorities, political representatives, and media outlets to amplify the Credit Union’s presence and credibility.

·Take on a proactive outreach role—attending community events, festivals, meetings, and forums—to both increase visibility and deepen relationships across all parts of the community.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

·Strong understanding of Credit Unions, the Cooperative movement, and the role of voluntary and community organisations.

·Insight into the impact of financial exclusion on individuals and communities.

·Hands-on involvement in community groups, underpinned by lived experience and grassroots engagement.

KEY SKILLS

·Marketing and communications (as outlined in the JD), with the ability to tailor messaging to different audiences to attract new members.

·Group facilitation, public speaking, and presentation skills.

·Proven networking and partnership-building capabilities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication.

·Familiar with marketing tools (content/designs)

·A qualification in Community Development, Marketing or similar is desirable.

·1-2 years’ experience is desirable.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

·Support less experienced staff knowledge and tasks

·Be a leader to those who will also engage and support within the Marketing field.

·To undertake any other duties as maybe required by Deputy, CEO, team and board.
