Job summary

Babcock is offering a Marine Structures Engineering Undergraduate Placement Year in Bristol. You’ll join the Submarine Support Engineering Structures Group and contribute to structural assessments, explosive shock survivability, and platform surveys across key naval bases.

You’ll work with ANSYS, MathCAD and AutoCAD, gaining hands-on experience and mentoring from seasoned professionals. The placement could lead to a graduate program on successful completion.

Qualifications

• Final year of bachelor’s or master’s degree in structural/mechanical/naval/civil engineering or related field.
• Must be able to obtain BPSS and Security Check (SC) clearance per UK GOV.UK guidance.
• Post may be restricted to a sole UK national under national security legislation.

Responsibilities

• Work at the Babcock Technology Centre in Bristol in the Submarine Support Engineering Structures Group for the full year.
• Perform structural assessments using hand calculations and FEA.
• Design and evaluate platform structures for explosive shock survivability.
• Conduct platform surveys and validation exercises at Devonport Royal Dockyard and HM Naval Base Clyde.
• Support technical investigations, feasibility studies and engineering trials; manage structural defects and safety certifications.
• Assist in future platform projects and capability upgrades to enhance operational performance.
