The Opportunity

At Leonardo, we have a fantastic new opportunity for a Manufacturing Engineer to join the TGS Mechanical Assembly Process Engineering team in Southampton, supporting the manufacture of infra-red detector assemblies.

This is a hands-on role supporting manufacturing in a cutting-edge environment and offers opportunities for career development across diverse processes, combining practical and desk-based activities.

What You Will Do As a Manufacturing Engineer

  • This is a site-based role at our manufacturing facility in Southampton.
  • You will be part of a team of Manufacturing/Process Engineers responsible for:
    • Running capital projects to introduce new production equipment
    • Root cause analysis and problem solving (8D, DMAIC, PFMEA)
    • Contributing to new product introduction initiatives regarding design for manufacture
    • Conducting reviews on manufacturing maturity and product costs
    • Monitoring equipment and process performance, including SPC
    • Employing statistical tools to stabilize and improve processes
    • Serving as Process Champion for selected processes
    • Suggesting and implementing process improvements
    • Writing process instructions and manufacturing routings
    • Training operatives and documenting training plans
    • Providing line support to meet throughput targets
    • Monitoring yields, defects, and process times
    • Investigating defects and yield issues
    • Defining re-work processes and routine TPM tasks

Supported Processes Include

  • Mechanical assembly (welding, soldering, bonding, gluing, alignment)
  • Inspection (Optical Gauging, CMM, microscopes)
  • Helium BOM and Leak testing
  • Wire bonding, Blackening, Metal deposition
  • Mechanical cutting and polishing of crystal materials

What We Need From You

You really must have

  • Experience supporting medium-volume, precision mechanical assemblies
  • Proven skills in capital equipment development, procurement, installation, and commissioning
  • Ability to engage with all levels of the organization, from operators to senior management

Additional advantageous experience includes:

  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/Six Sigma
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience working in an AS9100 or similar certified environment
  • Strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Experience with MRP/ERP systems like SAP
