We’re re-imagining mining to improve people’s lives, including the lives of everyone who works for Anglo American. We strive to be a great company where employees are happy and inspired to do their best work, allowing every colleague to grow, develop, and realize their potential. To live up to our Always with Purpose employee value proposition, we prioritize the development and growth of colleagues by ensuring everyone at Anglo American has the career experience they deserve.

The Shipping Team is a stand-alone profit centre (separate legal entity) and service provider for ocean freight services within the Marketing Business Unit.

As part of its role, Shipping is the in-house ocean freight service provider for the Marketing Business, which includes commercial freight provision, technical operations, safety and regulatory support, and market information. Shipping leverages the Anglo American cargo base to generate additional earnings from ocean freight activity by engaging in third-party freight activity. Using global scale and strength, the team aims to optimize marine activities and provide safe, reliable, sustainable, and competitive freight to commodity businesses, their customers, and further into Shipping’s own customer base.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this role is to bring strong ocean freight technical, procedural, and regulatory experience and knowledge to the Shipping Division, with a primary focus on vessel and crew safety. This role will specifically focus on activities in the Minor Bulk sector of the portfolio and will have accountability for Port Captains in South America and South Africa.

KEY TASKS

Safety

  • Implement and ensure adherence to the safety framework surrounding Shipping activities, including incident investigations.
  • Manage the Shipping Crisis Management Plan within the Minor Bulk sector, including updates, regular drills, and participation in the Crisis Management Team.
  • Contribute to and enforce the setting of vessel vetting standards according to the Anglo American Vetting Policy.
  • Report and discuss safety performance in the Shipping Division with Group Safety.
  • Manage the Port Captain service strategically placed at key ports globally over the next 3-5 years.

Technical Operations

  • Provide maritime technical support on an ad hoc basis to the Shipping Chartering & Operations team.
  • Offer maritime technical expertise to projects, including M&A, capital projects, and trading activities.
  • Manage and control technical operating procedures.
  • Conduct technical reviews of commercial term transactions to ensure alignment with technical strategy and risk profile.
  • Support building projects with technical expertise.
  • Assist functions such as insurance, agency agreements, and bunkering with technical support.
  • Provide technical support for decarbonization efforts, including accountability for carbon reporting.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure ocean freight activities comply with current maritime regulations, including IMO and nation-specific rules.
  • Report and communicate the impact of new regulations in the marine sector back to the Shipping Division and, where appropriate, the CMT.

Product Stewardship

  • Represent Shipping in Group product stewardship discussions.

Communication

  • Regularly report to senior management on technical and regulatory developments in the maritime sector.
  • Maintain and report safety and sustainability statistics in the Shipping monthly report.

Knowledge

  • This role requires significant experience and knowledge in the maritime industry, with a detailed understanding of the technical and operational aspects of ocean freight activities.
  • Expertise in the global dry bulk shipping industry from operational and technical perspectives.
  • Understanding of the Group's key commodities, including regular trades, cargo handling, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime regulatory environments as they relate to dry bulk shipping and cargoes.
  • Understanding of regulatory and cultural aspects of key ports where we discharge and load cargo.
  • Knowledge of standard charter party terms and their relation to cargo lifting.
  • Understanding of insurance requirements within dry bulk shipping.
  • Familiarity with the RightShip system and its functionality.
  • Understanding of policy agendas in key jurisdictions such as South Africa, Brazil, and Chile concerning maritime activities and the environment.
