Management Accountant

Salary: £35,000–£40,000 per annum

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

Location: Dereham, In-office

About Avena

Avena is a fast-growing, sustainability-driven organisation specialising in the secure and sustainable destruction of sensitive business materials. We are seeking a highly capable and detail-oriented Management Accountant to join our finance team and support our continued growth.

This is a key position requiring a commercially-minded finance professional with proven experience. The successful candidate will manage key financial operations, drive process improvements, and produce strategic financial insights to support senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Operational Oversight

  • Manage and develop the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable team, including training and performance monitoring.
  • Ensure department KPIs are met through structured processes and proactive oversight.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to automate and streamline financial operations.

Financial Management & Control

  • Maintain the Fixed Asset Register, Accruals & Prepayments Schedules.
  • Oversee VAT returns and ensure ongoing compliance with HMRC and internal policies.
  • Support external audits, ensuring timely and accurate responses to auditor queries.
  • Uphold rigorous financial controls and ensure full documentation is maintained.

Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly management accounts (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow).
  • Conduct variance and sensitivity analysis to inform business decisions.
  • Develop robust cost allocation methodologies and support cost-saving initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with accounting standards and company policies.

Strategic & Budgetary Support

  • Provide financial insight and analysis to support strategic decisions.
  • Assist in annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Support business initiatives with clear financial modelling and recommendations.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Part-qualified (ACCA, CIMA, or ACA).
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a management accountant role.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or team leadership position.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Desirable

  • Experience with Xero accounting software.
  • Background in a service-led or waste/environmental industry.
  • Familiarity with supporting external audits.
