Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Maintenance Technician (Plumbing/Mechanical) to join the Estates team on a permanent full-time basis. The role supports repairs, installations and preventative maintenance across multiple sites.

You will work independently and with colleagues, lead complex tasks, supervise contractors, and help maintain safe, reliable hospital facilities for children and young people.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 qualification in plumbing or mechanical building services with relevant experience.
  • Completion of a recognised trade apprenticeship (CITB/EITB) or equivalent.
  • Experience in healthcare estates maintenance or a similar industrial setting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on complex plumbing/mechanical maintenance tasks and projects.
  • Carry out fault finding, repairs, planned maintenance and safe isolations.
  • Inspect, diagnose and resolve faults on engineering systems and installations.
  • Supervise and support colleagues and contractors as required.
  • Use specialist tools and testing equipment for safe operation of services.

We are recruiting a Maintenance Technician (Plumbing/Mechanical) to join our Estates team, supporting the delivery of a comprehensive maintenance service across Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will undertake repairs, installations, and planned preventative maintenance on plumbing and mechanical systems and associated equipment across multiple Trust sites. Working as part of a skilled Estates team, you will help ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the hospital environment, supporting the delivery of outstanding care for children and young people.

This role requires a proactive and flexible approach, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team to maintain high standards of service, safety, and compliance.

Main duties of the job

Reporting into the Head of Operations & Maintenance some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead on complex plumbing/mechanical maintenance tasks and projects
  • Carry out fault finding, repairs, planned maintenance, and safe isolations on plant and equipment
  • Inspect, diagnose, and resolve faults on engineering systems and installations
  • Supervise and support colleagues and contractors as required
  • Use specialist tools and testing equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation of services
  • Work independently and collaboratively to deliver high-quality maintenance across the Trust estate.

Person specification
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Estates maintenance procedures (electrical or mechanical) acquired via taught courses, and relevant.
  • Level 3 qualification e.g. City and Guilds / NVQ3 / ONC / Experienced Worker Qualification in plumbing or mechanical building services along with relevant experience demonstrating knowledge at a technician level.
  • Completion of other a recognised trade CITB/EITB apprenticeship in an appropriate craft plus a high degree of versatility and demonstrable experience in a similar technical discipline at Level 3 / NVQ3.
  • Competent Person / experience in the specialist areas of Medical Gas, Ventilation, Decontamination, Water Safety Relevant to the post skill set.
  • HNC in a relevant Engineering subject
Experience
  • Experience in an industrial or contracting role
  • Competent Person / experience in the specialist areas of Medical Gas, Ventilation, Decontamination, Water Safety Relevant to the post skill set.
  • Experience in complex Engineering Services maintenance with a demonstrable track record of competence and ability to take the lead.
  • Experience gained in Healthcare establishments
  • Experience in the preparation of designs, estimates and project management of maintenance works and small projects.
  • The ability to interpret the clients requirements into effective solutions
Knowledge
  • Experience in the preparation of designs, estimates and project management of maintenance works and small projects.
  • Good knowledge of Health and Safety, Asbestos, COSHH, Confined Spaces, Electrical safety
  • Be trained and competent to use workshop equipment
