Job description

The key function is to support NHS Property Services in delivering building services maintenance and repairs across the NHS to ensure buildings are maintained to the highest standards and to provide a safe and secure environment for visitors, customers, and employees.

Main duties of the job

Ensure compliance in line with all processes/procedures and policies that meet organisational standards/requirements, including but not limited to our Health & Safety Policy, HTMs (Health Technical Memoranda), and SFG20. Undertake routine planned and reactive maintenance as instructed by the Team Leader, supporting minor work activities. Perform routine repairs or minor works such as joinery, painting, decoration, general building works, ground works, or plumbing. Maintain effective site log books at all NHS premises, ensuring timely and accurate completion. Support the Projects/Construction team and Team Leader in delivering minor capital works to NHS premises.

Job responsibilities

We have an opportunity for a Maintenance Operative (Plumbing) based at London - St Charles Hospital - Main Building. This is a permanent, full-time role (37.5 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 8am-4.30pm), covering West London. The starting salary is from £28,000 depending on experience, plus on-call allowance. Requirements include:

  • NVQ Level 2 or higher BTEC/City & Guilds or equivalent in Plumbing & Heating
  • Formal apprenticeship or craft-trained equivalent

Additional requirements:

  • Driving licence is essential
  • Comfort with using technological devices for logging jobs
  • On-call availability
  • Industry experience (desirable)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with other technical disciplines

Note: DBS and DVLA checks are required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with NHSPS Health, Safety & Wellbeing Policies, technical guidance, regulations, and HTMs.
  • Deliver scheduled, reactive, and remedial maintenance as directed, maintaining operational standards.
  • Support minor works activities and undertake routine repairs including joinery, painting, general building, ground works, or plumbing.
  • Maintain site log books accurately and timely.
  • Assist in delivering minor capital works.
  • Perform risk assessments and work within relevant permits or work plans.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 2 or higher BTEC/City & Guilds or equivalent
  • Full UK Driving Licence
Experience
  • Experience in building maintenance and minor works
  • Experience working with method statements or permits to work
  • Knowledge of SFG20 standards and healthcare maintenance
  • Experience with CAFM reporting systems
