Job summary

Bupa UK in Thatcham is seeking a Maintenance Operative to keep the facilities fully functional at Thatcham Court. You will maintain buildings and equipment in line with SOPs, legislation and brand values, ensuring safe, comfortable living spaces for residents.

The role requires understanding of building services, preferred qualifications, and a flexible approach to support nearby care homes when needed. Full-time hours, 40 per week, with a competitive hourly rate.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of heating, water distribution, ventilation, electrical distribution and plumbing.
  • Experience with planned maintenance systems and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of statutory requirements and compliance.
  • Full driving licence held.
  • Building/electrical/plumbing qualification or 3 years hands-on maintenance experience.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Computer literacy essential.
  • Good customer service and flexible attitude.
  • Experience in painting and decorating is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out safety checks and compliance tasks using digital systems.
  • Close tasks assigned by Maintenance Manager or home on compliance tools.
  • Maintain safety and cleanliness to EH/Fire Authority requirements.
  • Carry out repairs to a high standard with value-for-money mindset.
  • Document residents' preferences regarding personal space and act on them.
  • Obtain quotes and manage repairs with approved contractors.
  • Report irreparable defects to Home Manager or Property/Maintenance Manager.
  • Assist with regional refurbishment and capex programs with minimal disruption.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and ensure safe storage.
  • Assist with induction on emergency exits and evacuation procedures.

Location: Thatcham Court Care Home. Chapel Street, Thatcham, Berkshire RG18 4QL

Contract: Permanent - Full Time

Hours: 40 hours per week - flexibility required

Salary: £14.10 - £17.30 per hour dependent on experience

Thatcham Court is a purpose-built dementia care home. The home is dedicated to caring for adults living with dementia, from early onset to more complex end-of-life needs, the home provides all types of dementia care including nursing, residential, Parkinson's and short-stay care.

This home is situated in the centre of Thatcham and has dementia champions who work to improve the quality of life for residents through daily activities and opportunities for reminiscence and stimulation. The home's interior has been decorated to suit individuals with dementia, being colour-themed and including memory triggers.

The chefs create well-crafted menus made with the freshest ingredients. Soon after a resident arrives at Thatcham Court, staff discuss their personal preferences and dietary needs with them. Individual diet needs and preference is included in the food menu, with mealtimes being an important part of the day.

There's a real sense of community at the home. The staff work to discover what residents enjoy doing and the home's social calendar is organised around those interests. Activities are organised to make sure residents are always physically and mentally stimulated, including reminiscence sessions, exercise sessions and music classes.

As a Maintenance Operative, your primary responsibility will be ensuring that our facilities remain fully functional. You will maintain buildings and equipment effectively while complying with all relevant Bupa Standard Operating Procedures, legislation, and industry best practices. Your role is crucial in ensuring our accommodation meets Bupa's cultural and brand values.

You’ll Help Us Make Health Happen By
  • Ensuring that all health and safety and compliance checks are carried out using the provided digital systems as per the timescales directed by Bupa Standard Operating Procedures and by Bupa compliance management tools and software
  • Action and close any tasks attributed to the Maintenance Manager or home highlighted on Bupa compliance management tools and software
  • Ensure that safety and cleanliness within the care home and grounds is to the satisfaction of Environmental Health, local Fire Authority requirements, Legionella Risk Assessment requirements and Health & Safety regulations etc
  • Ensure that all necessary maintenance and repair tasks are completed to a high standard, in a timely manner and offer value for money whilst ensuring internal decoration continues to meet the organisations vision regarding first impressions
  • Ensure regular review of residents’ preferences in relation to their personal space is documented and actioned
  • Report defects, obtain quotes and manage repairs using Bupa approved contractors, complying at all times with Bupa’s Standard Operating Procedures
  • Report irreparable defects to Home Manager or Property/Maintenance Manager as appropriate
  • Manage Care Home elements of any refurbishment programme and capex programme of works ensuring minimal disruption to residents, visitors and staff
  • Ensure that all tools and equipment are maintained and safely secured at all times
  • Assist with induction of new colleagues with regard to the operation of emergency exits, fire points and evacuation procedures, keeping a record of all instructions given as required by the Home Manager, especially where the use of equipment is involved
  • Although you will be located within a home there may be a requirement to provide maintenance support to a local Care Homes within a reasonable distance (no more than 1hr from normal place of work) as and when required to provide a comprehensive regional maintenance support.
Key Skills / Qualifications Needed For This Role
  • A good understanding of building services including, heating, hot and cold-water distribution, ventilation, electrical distribution, and plumbing
  • Sound understanding of building fabric and its maintenance
  • Practical experience of planned maintenance systems and record keeping
  • Knowledge of relevant statutory requirements and experience of compliance
  • A full driving licence
  • A building/electrical/plumbing qualification (City & Guilds, BTEC, ONC, HNC etc) or a minimum of 3 years hand on experience in property maintenance and general repairs where possible
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Computer literate
  • Good Customer service skills
  • Be flexible to meet changing demands within the care home
  • Practical ability and experience in painting and decorating
