Job Overview

Maintenance Operative – Freelands Croft Care Home, Redfields Lane, Fleet, GU52 0AD.

Contract: Permanent – Full Time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm with on‑call responsibilities. Salary: Up to £17.05 per hour, dependent on experience. CQC rating: Good. Carehome.co.uk rating: 9.6 / 10.

Freelands Croft is dedicated to caring for people with dementia, providing nursing, residential and short‑stay care in 64 en‑suite bedrooms. The home offers lounges, a wrap‑around garden, a hair salon, a vintage‑style café and a reminiscence room. Residents enjoy dining rooms, weekly activities such as visiting musicians, curry nights, quiz nights, musical bingo, weekly outings, arts and crafts, coffee mornings, and a supportive community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure all health and safety and compliance checks are carried out using the provided digital systems as per the timescales directed by Bupa Standard Operating Procedures and compliance tools.
  • Action and close any tasks attributed to the Maintenance Manager or highlighted on Bupa compliance tools.
  • Maintain safety and cleanliness in the care home and grounds to satisfy Environmental Health, local Fire Authority requirements, Legionella Risk Assessment and Health & Safety regulations.
  • Complete all maintenance and repair tasks to a high standard, in a timely manner and provide value for money, while ensuring internal decoration meets the organisation’s vision of first impressions.
  • Review residents’ preferences relative to their personal space, document and act on them.
  • Report defects, obtain quotes and manage repairs using Bupa‑approved contractors, complying with all Bupa Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Report irreparable defects to the Home Manager or Property/Maintenance Manager as appropriate.
  • Manage care‑home elements of any refurbishment or capex programme, ensuring minimal disruption to residents, visitors and staff.
  • Maintain and secure all tools and equipment safely.
  • Assist with induction of new colleagues regarding the operation of emergency exits, fire points and evacuation procedures, keeping required records.
  • Provide maintenance support to local care homes within one hour of the workplace when necessary, as part of regional maintenance support.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Good understanding of building services including heating, hot and cold‑water distribution, ventilation, electrical distribution and plumbing.
  • Sound understanding of building fabric and its maintenance.
  • Practical experience of planned maintenance systems and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of relevant statutory requirements and experience of compliance.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Building / electrical / plumbing qualification (e.g. City & Guilds, BTEC, ONC, HNC) or minimum three years of hands‑on experience in property maintenance and general repairs.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Computer literate.
  • Good customer‑service skills.
  • Flexibility to meet changing demands within the care home.
  • Practical ability and experience in painting and decorating.
