Job summary

Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospital Trust is seeking a Shift Mechanical Engineer for a long-term agency assignment at its hospital sites. The role involves 4 on, 4 off shifts (2 days and 2 nights) and a pay rate of £16-£25 per hour.

You will perform PPM and reactive maintenance on a range of mechanical systems across the estate. The ideal candidate has a recognised mechanical apprenticeship or City & Guilds, minimum 3 years post-apprenticeship experience, and strong fault-finding skills across

Qualifications

  • Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship or City & Guilds qualification.
  • Minimum 3 years' post-apprenticeship maintenance experience.
  • Strong fault-finding and repair skills across mechanical building services systems (ventilation, heating, boilers, pumps, compressors, water systems).

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose faults and undertake repairs to mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Respond to engineering breakdowns and emergency call-outs.
  • Monitor and respond to Building Management System (BMS) alerts.
  • Maintain heating, ventilation, pumps, compressors, boilers, water systems and related mechanical plant.
  • Support minor installation, improvement and upgrade works.
  • Complete all maintenance documentation accurately and promptly.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to ensure estate service delivery.
  • Adhere to health and safety, infection control and site procedures.

Shift Mechanical Engineer
Location: Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospital Trust Sites

Rate: £16 - £25 per hour

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on a range of mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose faults and undertake repairs to mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Respond to engineering breakdowns and emergency call-outs.
  • Monitor and respond to Building Management System (BMS) alerts.
  • Maintain heating, ventilation, pumps, compressors, boilers, water systems and associated mechanical plant.
  • Support minor installation, improvement and upgrade works.
  • Complete all maintenance documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to ensure service delivery across the estate.
  • Adhere to all health and safety, infection control and site procedures.
Requirements
  • Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent City & Guilds qualification.
  • Minimum 3 years' post-apprenticeship maintenance experience.
  • Strong fault-finding and repair skills across a range of mechanical building services systems, including: Ventilation systems, Heating systems, Boilers, Pumps, Compressors, Hot and cold water systems, Medical gas systems (desirable).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Desirable Experience: Previous NHS or healthcare estates maintenance experience.
  • Competent Person or Authorised Person experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems.
