Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) is an independent education provider and one of the best known and most well-respected independent college brands in the UK.

Occupying three Georgian town houses, Head Office suite and the recently acquired Queen’s Gate House, a building that was purchased by MPW in 2021 and has since been refurbished to include a new student boarding facility, teaching rooms, offices and events hall.

The role:

We are seeking an organised and experienced Maintenance Engineer to lead a team of three, to deliver the maintenance of our multi-use facilities and school premises in central London. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring efficient functioning of our premises, including the management of PPM schedules, undertaking and/or overseeing repairs, coordinating with internal resources and external contractors. The Maintenance Team Leader will play a key role in maintaining a safe and comfortable working environment for our employees, students and range of visitors who hire function rooms.

Duties and responsibilities:

You will take an active and lead role in maintaining the facilities at Queens Gate House and three other buildings in the estate.There will be regular and time dependent works you will undertake yourself, delegate to the team (2 x maintenance engineers) and others that will be done through contractor appointment that you will oversee. Larger projects and some plant maintenance will be undertaken through established partners, again you will oversee and manage these contracts.

Alongside colleagues you will take a lead role in ensuring best practise on building management, operations and health and safety issues for all users of the facilities, and:

·Establish and implement the agreed PPM schedules

·Respond to and prioritise reactive maintenance requests (FreshDesk)

·Plan the ongoing maintenance programme and schedule of improvements and including cosmetic decoration

·Provide input to the priorities for the ongoing refurbishment and maintenance of QGH and elsewhere in the MPW London estate.

·Take an active role in delivering maintenance solutions, delegating to the team and sourcing contractors where necessary. Provide a first point of contact for both routine and emergency maintenance issues for the team

·Establish and develop strong relationships with supplier networks. Work with existing and new contractors to resolve issues in a cost effective and VFM manner.

·Have a keen eye for cost savings and minimise wastage and environmental impact of the building and activities within.

·Work closely with the existing buildings soft facilities management to bring together a single strategy on the various contracts of support such as security, cleaning and health and safety.

·Maintain accurate records for health and safety, maintenance and other areas statutory compliance – utilising the Hansam record system.

·Be fully conversant with current legislation and keep updated on changes to health and safety, fire prevention and other areas of compliance.

·Ensure staff are correctly trained and adhere to Health and Safety Policies and expected customer engagement (internal/external).

Building management:

·Oversee the maintenance and repair of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and security systems.

·Coordinate with external contractors and service providers for maintenance, repairs, and renovations and ensuring appropriate quality and performance supervision

·Conduct regular inspections to identify maintenance needs and safety hazards.

Health & Safety:

·Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and industry standards.

·Ensuring that appropriate reporting/record management meets full compliance.

·Ensure recommendations from Fire Risk assessments/audits are managed and completed in a timely manner

·Carry out and supervise water hygiene.

Carry out any reasonable request from Management within the general scope and purpose of the position, including portering.

You will have:

  • Proven experience in maintenance management is essential, preferably in a commercial or education environment.
  • Practical skills to undertake minor repairs, more extensive experience in one or more of the trades would be beneficial.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and facilities management software.
  • Certification in facilities management (e.g., CFM, FMP) is desirable but not mandatory
  • Qualifications in a trade (plumbing, electrical, carpentry) is desirable but not mandatory

Place of work: MPW London, Queen’s Gate, South Kensington, London SW7

Hours: Predicated on 40 hours per week. Due to the nature of the business this may include some flexible working hours, which may include some evening and weekend work as required by the business.
