Job summary

Contek Recruitment Solutions Ltd represents a well-established Reading-based manufacturing client in need of a hands-on Maintenance Engineer. The role covers planned and reactive maintenance across plant and production equipment, with a balanced mechanical and electrical workload and a 40-hour week.

The successful candidate will carry out fault-finding, repairs, and participate in upgrades, ensuring safe, compliant operations and documentation of all maintenance activities.

Qualifications

• This role requires a balanced mechanical and electrical maintenance background.
• Experience maintaining plant, machinery and production equipment in a manufacturing/industrial environment.
• Experience with planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdowns.
• Desirable to have an engineering qualification or apprenticeship, and 18th Edition is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and preventative maintenance across plant, machinery and production equipment.
• Respond to breakdowns and carry out fault-finding to minimise production downtime.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults across a range of machinery.
• Install, modify and commission new and existing machinery.
• Identify recurring faults and contribute to improvements in reliability and performance.
• Complete maintenance records and document all work accurately.
• Collaborate with production teams to respond to maintenance requirements and minimise disruption.
• Support continuous improvement and engineering projects across the site.
• Ensure maintenance activities are carried out safely and in line with site procedures.

Contek Recruitment are representing their client, a well-established manufacturing business based in Reading, who are looking to appoint a hands-on Maintenance Engineer to support the ongoing operation and reliability of their plant, machinery and production equipment.

This is a varied maintenance position covering both planned and reactive maintenance across the site. The ideal candidate will have a balanced mechanical and electrical skill set and be comfortable working across a range of manufacturing machinery and equipment.

This is a salaried position based on a 40-hour working week.

Role Overview

• Carry out planned and preventative maintenance across plant, machinery and production equipment.
• Respond to breakdowns and carry out effective fault-finding to minimise production downtime.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults across a range of machinery.
• Work on motors, gearboxes, pumps, conveyors, bearings, drives and other mechanical equipment.
• Carry out electrical fault-finding on control panels, sensors, motors, relays and associated equipment.
• Support the installation, modification and commissioning of new and existing machinery.
• Identify recurring faults and contribute to improvements in machinery reliability and performance.
• Complete maintenance records and ensure all work is accurately documented.
• Work closely with production teams to respond to maintenance requirements and minimise disruption.
• Support continuous improvement and engineering projects across the site.
• Ensure maintenance activities are completed safely and in line with site procedures.
• Maintain a clean, organised and safe engineering working environment.

Person Specification

• Strong hands-on approach with the ability to work autonomously and take initiative.
• Ideally a balanced 50/50 mechanical and electrical maintenance background.
• Good mechanical fault-finding and repair skills.
• Good electrical fault-finding skills, ideally including basic control systems and sensors.
• Comfortable working within a busy manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose faults efficiently.Able to prioritise reactive maintenance while maintaining planned preventative maintenance schedules.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with production and engineering teams.
• Self-motivated, reliable and willing to get involved across a broad range of engineering activities.

Essential Experience

• Previous experience as a Maintenance Engineer, Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer, Maintenance Technician or similar.
• Proven experience maintaining plant, machinery and production equipment within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Strong mechanical maintenance experience.
• Electrical maintenance and fault-finding experience.
• Experience of planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown response.
• Recognised engineering qualification or apprenticeship is desirable.
• 18th Edition electrical qualification would be advantageous but is not essential.
