Job description

Machinist Grinder

Fortress Recruit is now looking for an experienced Machinist Grinder to join a leading defence and marine engineering organisation based in Portsmouth, on their late shift.

Working within a specialist machining area, you'll manufacture high-precision components used within complex marine and defence applications, working across a variety of manual machinery and specialist materials.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Operating grinding machines to manufacture high-precision components
  • Working across additional manual machining processes including milling, turning, drilling and lapping
  • Machining specialist materials including Inconel, stainless steels, carbon and composites
  • Working accurately to tight tolerances using a variety of precision measuring equipment
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and machining processes
  • Carrying out basic mechanical assembly and fitting activities
  • Working flexibly across different machines and manufacturing duties according to production requirements
  • Supporting continuous improvement across manufacturing processes and procedures
  • Working closely with the wider production team to achieve quality and delivery targets
  • Ensuring all machining activities are completed safely and in accordance with Health & Safety procedures
To be considered for this role, you'll have:
  • Previous hands-on experience operating grinding machines
  • Experience working within an engineering, machining or tool room environment
  • A good understanding of manual machining processes
  • The ability to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Experience working to tight tolerances and using precision measuring equipment
  • Good mechanical aptitude, ideally including assembly or fitting experience
  • A strong understanding of Health & Safety within a manufacturing environment
  • The flexibility and willingness to work across different machining processes as required
  • A genuine interest in developing your skills and learning new manufacturing technology

Previous CNC experience would be advantageous, but you do not need to be an experienced CNC Grinder. The business is particularly interested in experienced manual machinists and grinders with the right engineering foundations, practical ability and willingness to develop. Significant investment is being made into their manufacturing capabilities, so you'll have the opportunity to learn existing processes before being trained and developed towards new CNC grinding technology during your first year.

This is a full-time, permanent position working 37 hours per week on the late shift, offering up to £35K plus annual bonus, 20% shift uplift, private medical insurance and an enhanced pension scheme.
