Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking a Technical Specialist: Machine Integration to lead design, build and implementation of custom machines for the AMRC. You will mentor a junior installation team and work on IMG machine build processes, ensuring compliance with the machinery directive and safety standards.

You will contribute to project hardware requirements, develop technical files, and support procurement, testing and reliability of machinery in an industrial research setting.

Qualifications

  • Have a good honours degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent industrial experience).
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems and assist others to do the same, including mentoring in your technical field.
  • Ability to keep abreast of technical developments within machinery safety, relevant standards bodies, and pneumatic design.
  • Ability to develop external partnerships (new partners or suppliers), and maintain existing relationships with key partners.
  • Experience of working and complying to standards (e.g. quality standards, ISO standards and H&S policies).
  • Ability to define design specifications, create technical file documentation, contribute to the procurement of hardware, build and testing of machinery, following the latest standards within your technical field.
  • Experience in using hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment safely in a laboratory or workshop environment.
  • Technical Professional Registration or the willingness to work towards it.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver the installation of machines ensuring research project requirements, budget, timelines and specs are met.
  • Design schematics and plans within your area for machines to latest standards.
  • Solve complex manufacturing problems and manage resources effectively.
  • Drive continuous improvement to IMG machinery and adhere to IMG standards.
  • Contribute to Machinery Technical files for prototype machinery to support R&D.
  • Support procurement of hardware and safety testing scripts.
  • Stay informed on developments in mechatronics to guide IMG research direction.
  • Provide expertise in infrastructure, pneumatics and machinery safety to customers and the org.
  • Ensure compliance with machinery directive and standards.
  • Carry out Factory and Site Acceptance Testing and safety testing on machinery.
