Job summary

The AMRC, part of the University of Sheffield, seeks a Technical Specialist: Machine Integration to lead the design, build and deployment of industry-grade machines for research projects. You will work with the IMG machine build team, ensure compliance with machinery directives and safety standards, mentor junior staff, and drive continuous improvement across our machinery portfolio.

Overview

As a Technical Specialist: Machine Integration, you will carry out the design, build and implementation of custom industry-grade machines for the AMRC, supporting a team of research engineers to develop novel solutions for the high value manufacturing sector.

Based in the Integrated Manufacturing Group (IMG), you will work with the machine build team to ensure successful project delivery, working on continuous improvement to IMG machine build processes, and supporting AMRC's reputation in compliance with the machinery directive and associated standards.

The ideal candidate should have proven experience in the field of industrial machine design and implementation with demonstrable expertise in the concept design, down-selection, design, build, testing and commissioning of machinery (including infrastructure, pneumatic and functional safety) in an industrial setting. You will be willing to mentor a junior machine installation team and able to adapt to and learn new systems when necessary.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Responsible for the delivery of machine installation, taking into account the research project requirements, budget, timelines and technical specifications.
• Complete and approve design schematics and plans within your technical area for machines, following the latest standards within your technical field
• Responsible for solving complex manufacturing and other highly technical problems. This will include managing the resources to ensure that it is properly focused most effectively.
• Responsible for delivering continuous improvement to IMG's new and existing machinery by implementing IMG standards.
• Contribute to completion of Machinery Technical files for prototype machinery to support research and development activities.
• Contribute to project hardware requirements including procurement of hardware, completion of functional design specifications, designer risk assessments, and development of safety functional testing scripts.
• Remain abreast of technical developments within mechatronics, to support and influence the technical direction of IMG research.
• Provide a high level of technical knowledge and expertise within infrastructure, pneumatics and machinery safety for customers and others within the organisation.
• Provide outputs to prove compliance with the machinery directive and associated standards.
• Carry out and sign off Factory and Site Acceptance Testing, Standard Conformation qualifications and safety functional testing on machinery.
• Communicate and work closely with the project management and research functions to ensure IMG strategy is adhered to and the group is running efficiently.
• Have financial and timeframe awareness concerning project budgets and deadlines.
• Provide technical guidance and expertise to others within IMG and the AMRC.
• Adhere to the AMRC's quality management system and health and safety system and policies.
• Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post

Grade: 7

Salary: £38,784 - £43,482 per annum (pro-rata), with potential to progress to £47,389 through sustained exceptional contribution in the role.
