Job summary

Headley Professional Recruitment Ltd are seeking a commercially-minded Quantity Surveyor for our client, a retail fit-out and M&E contractor operating across the UK. You will provide expert commercial input from inception to final account, with focus on budgets, cash flow, and subcontractor management.

You should have at least 3 years' QS experience in M&E or construction, with exposure to retail fit-out advantageous; strong Excel and MS Office skills are essential; a relevant degree is

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years' experience in a Quantity Surveyor role within M&E or wider construction
• Retail fit-out experience is desirable
• Experience producing detailed commercial reports, budgets, and cash flow forecasts
• Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel) and commercial software
• Awareness of construction methods and materials used in M&E projects

Responsibilities

• Attend site scoping visits, surveys, and pre-start meetings to support accurate project set-up
• Prepare detailed cost plans and budget estimates, ensuring smooth handover to delivery teams
• Manage multiple live projects, maintaining robust commercial control and contract compliance
• Liaise with clients' commercial teams to align on financial matters and project progress
• Issue subcontract enquiries, analyse quotes, and place orders in line with agreed terms
• Negotiate subcontractor terms to drive best value and minimise risk
• Provide ongoing commercial support to project managers and site teams
• Prepare and manage bills of quantities, valuations, variations and interim/final accounts
• Monitor project performance with CVR reporting
• Ensure commercial compliance with main contracts and subcontracts
• Manage and submit client variations promptly while challenging subcontractor claims
• Optimise cash flow through forecasting, valuation and invoicing
• Support strategic improvements across the commercial function and post-project reviews

Our client is a retail fit out and M&E contractor who work on projects across the UK. They're located near Leeds and have an excellent reputation and history of producing quality, fast track fit out and new build projects across the sector for leading UK clients. Many of these clients are large UK retailers such as Asda, Marks & Spencer, Sainsburys, Argos etc…

They're looking for a commercially-minded and self-motivated Quantity Surveyor. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the company's M&E projects. You'll be part of a dynamic team, providing expert commercial and contractual input from project inception through to final account.

Responsibilities:

• Attend site scoping visits, surveys, and pre-start meetings to support accurate project set-up
• Prepare detailed cost plans and budget estimates, ensuring smooth handover to delivery teams
• Manage multiple live projects, maintaining robust commercial control and contract compliance
• Liaise with clients' commercial teams to align on financial matters and project progress
• Issue subcontract enquiries, analyse quotes, and place orders in line with agreed terms

Required Experience and Qualifications:

• Minimum 3 years' experience in a Quantity Surveyor role within the M&E sector or wider construction industry
• Experience in the retail fit-out sector (desired)
• Experience producing detailed commercial reports, budgets, and cash flow forecasts
• Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and commercial software
• Awareness of construction methods and materials used in M&E projects
• BSc Degree, HND/HNC or BTEC in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field (desired)
