Job summary

The post holder within the Stroke Medicine service at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board will deliver comprehensive care across the stroke pathway, collaborating with consultants to uphold the department's policies and strategic plan. The role includes educational supervision of junior staff and advancing stroke services in line with the CTM 2030 Strategy.

They will participate in a non-resident 1 in 6 on-call for thrombolysis and thrombectomy at acute stroke sites, with remote support

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership in stroke medicine and contribute to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

• Participate in the non-resident 1 in 6 stroke thrombolysis/thrombectomy on-call; on-call is remote with IT support.
• Act as educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff and oversee their training.
• Develop and improve the stroke services within CTM Health Board in line with the CTM 2030 Strategy.

Job description

The post holder will help provide a service within the speciality of stroke medicine to Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness in Stroke Medicine.

The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with Consultant colleagues will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan of the Health Board.

The post holder will be expected to participate in a non-resident 1 in 6 stroke thrombolysis and thrombectomy on call covering the acute stroke sites in CTMUHB. This on call is done remotely and IT equipment will be provided.

The post holder will have the opportunity to act as educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff assigned to them, thus overseeing their training and being the initial source of advice for doctors regarding their careers.

This is a fixed term post till end of March 2027 to cover maternity leave.

This post will develop and improve the stroke services in Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board.

Currently stroke services are being provided at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital with two wards dedicated to acute stroke admissions (ASU)and step down rehabilitation. There is also further provision for rehabilitation beds in the community.

There is a full stroke MDT who work closely together for the best of their patients, including an Early Supported Discharge team, Community neurorehabilitation, and video fluoroscopy. There is a 24/7 Stroke Consultant led thrombolysis, access to thrombectomy via University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and Southmead Hospital in Bristol, daily TIA clinics, neuroradiology meetings, and MDT teaching. The ASU has a full complement of resident doctors including foundation doctors, CMTs, grade doctors and COTE / Acute Medicine Specialist Trainees along with an experienced team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
