Job summary

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust seeks a locum stroke consultant to support expanding thrombectomy services toward 24/7 provision for the South West Peninsula. The post involves out-of-hours thrombolysis advice, weekend hyperacute unit cover, and teaching across the multidisciplinary team.

Entry to the GMC Specialist Register is required, with a proposed CCT date within six months of interview. The role may be full-time or shared with another department, with opportunities for education

Qualifications

• CCT in a medical specialty, or CESR, or European Community rights.
• Proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
• Experience in stroke management, teaching and leadership roles.

Responsibilities

• Expand thrombectomy service to 24/7 provision for the South West Peninsula.
• Provide out-of-hours advice on thrombolysis and thrombectomy through a regional stroke network.
• Cover weekend shifts on the hyperacute stroke unit (no more than 1 weekend in 7).
• Join the consultant body and multidisciplinary team in the regional neuroscience centre.
• Medically manage the department and participate in rota coordination and committees.
• Teach medical students, residents, nurses and allied health professionals, including ACPs.
• Develop sub-specialty interests in stroke, education and clinical research.

Locum stroke consultant post at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, based mainly at Derriford Hospital, where the trust's regional neuroscience centre sits. The role supports expanding thrombectomy towards round-the-clock provision across the South West peninsula, with out-of-hours advice and weekend hyperacute unit cover. The job plan can be full-time stroke only or shared with another department such as neurology, and the post carries teaching and management duties. Entry to the GMC Specialist Register is required, with a proposed CCT date within six months of interview.

What the job involves

• Expand the thrombectomy service towards 24/7 provision for the South West Peninsula
• Give out-of-hours advice on thrombolysis and thrombectomy through a regional stroke network in development
• Cover weekend working on the hyperacute stroke unit, no more than 1 weekend in 7
• Join the existing consultant body and multidisciplinary team in the regional neuroscience centre
• Play an active role in developing and medically managing the department
• Train and teach medical students, resident doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, including ACPs
• Develop sub-specialty interests in stroke, education and clinical research

• Making independent stroke reperfusion decisions
• Evidence of a research interest and clinical audit
