Job summary

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is appointing an Elective and Emergency Care ENT Locum Consultant with a specialist interest in benign thyroid cancer. The post supports a Head and Neck Service for adults and paediatrics in a Trust integrating into the Black Country network.

The role includes a 10 PA weekly plan and an on-call rota of 1:5 weekday nights. A five-day service operates Monday to Friday; weekend emergencies are admitted to Neu Cross Hospital.

Qualifications

• Essential ENT qualifications with GMC registration.
• Experience in Head & Neck/Thyroid subspecialty is desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to audit and improve services.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible for delivering high-quality ENT services with evidence-based practice.
• Provide clinical advice to primary/secondary care and oversee referrals.
• Offer comprehensive outpatient management for suspected Head & Neck cancers and benign conditions.
• Support teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.
• Promote audit, research, and CME participation; contribute to service improvement.
• Develop ENT services in liaison with community and primary care services.

Job description

We are looking to appoint an elective and emergency care Ear, Nose and Throat Locum Consultant. The post holder will undertake duties in general Ear, Nose and Throat surgery with a specialist interest in Thyroid benign cancer. The post holder along with the other ENT Consultants, will be responsible for the efficient organization and effective management of the Head and Neck Service and Thyroid ENT patients (adult and Paediatrics). The post at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is currently in negotiation to be integrated into Black Country network. This job plan may involve approximately 20% of total PAs working offsite. The post will be contracted for 10 Programmed Activities per week and includes on call 1:5 weekday nights at Walsall Hospital. As Walsall operates a five-day service only Monday to Friday, all emergencies needing admission after 5pm on weekends are admitted to New Cross Hospital. (The network rota is 1:14). Paediatrics work in week is accommodated in the paediatrics unit at Walsall and surgery undertaken within the hospital's main emergency theatre. At the weekend, paediatrics is accommodated within the paediatric facilities available at New cross Hospital.

Main duties of the job

• To be responsible for ensuring a commitment in providing a high-quality ENT service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against Clinical standards
• To provide advice to primary and secondary care colleagues in other specialties in relation to ENT problems and overseeing the internal referrals assessed by SpRs
• To provide a comprehensive outpatient service from clinics, including the management of patients referred as suspected Head and Neck cancers. Such patients will receive their diagnostics at Walsall and if suspicious, will be discussed at MDT prior to tertiary referral to the cancer centre. Benign conditions will continue to be managed at Walsall
• To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students, and Postgraduate Medical Education in general. The Trust will strongly Support and allow time for CPD for the Successful candidate.
• To support and encourage audit and research and develop close links with academic initiatives.
• To actively participate in CME and personal development programmes

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Basic Medical Degree
• Full FRCS/MRCS (ENT) or equivalent
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:- CCT (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or CESR.
• Higher Medical Degree
• Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Ear, Nose and Throat (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
• Training Experience and able to cover Consultant duties.

CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

• Experience of conducting Clinical audit
• Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision making.
• Previous NHS Experience
• Sub specialist interest in Benign Head & Neck Surgery /Thyroid Surgery
• Specialty training or fixed term programme in EAR, Nose and Throat, or equivalent experience and competence.
