Job summary

East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust is seeking a Consultant Pathologist to join the cellular pathology team at The Lister Hospital, Stevenage, on a fixed-term basis. The post involves surgical cutup, reporting, cytology, and QA activities with 10 programmed activities and no on-call commitment.

You will work with the team of 9 consultants, contribute to CPD, audits, and service development, and mentor junior staff while supporting flexible working where possible.

Qualifications

• Participate in surgical cutup, surgical reporting, cytology reporting and frozen section reporting.
• Advise and be available for consultation on clinical matters with colleagues, GPs and Trust staff.
• Participate in the training of Clinical fellows.
• Interpret results and advise on further investigations where necessary.
• Participate in the management of the service and set clinical priorities with pathology management.
• Lead laboratory staff on clinical matters and day-to-day case handling.
• Participate in audit, accreditation and quality assurance schemes.
• Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Royal College of Pathologists.
• Comply with Trust mandatory training program.
• Work with colleagues on strategic direction and administrative duties.
• Advise on changes in methodologies or new equipment, consumables or tests.

This is a fixed-term appointment, based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage. The post comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs). There is no on call commitment.

This is an excellent opportunity within the Pathology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The successful applicant will form part of the Trust’s pathology department and will be a part of the current team of 9 consultants providing a comprehensive Cellular Pathology service. The department provides a comprehensive range of services for our resident population of approximately 600,00 residing mainly in East and North Hertfordshire and extends to the borders of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, West Hertfordshire and Essex

• To participate in surgical cutup, surgical reporting, cytology reporting, Frozen section reporting, thus ensuring the delivery of a high quality histopathology, cytopathology service.
• To advise and be available for consultation on clinical matters both generally and on an individual patient basis with clinical colleagues in the hospital, general practitioners and Trust staff.
• To participate in the training of the Clinical fellows.
• To be responsible for interpretation of results and advise on appropriate further investigations where necessary.
• To participate in the management of the service and work with laboratory staff and pathology management team to set clinical priorities and resolve operational problems.
• To lead laboratory staff on clinical matters. The Consultant Pathologist will instruct and work with laboratory staff in the day to day handling of cases.
• To participate in audit, accreditation and quality assurance schemes.
• To undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Royal College of Pathologists.
• To comply with the Trust mandatory training program.
• To work with colleagues on setting the strategic clinical direction and development of the pathology service and to participate in administrative duties as required.
• To advise and discuss with the pathology management team changes in methodologies or introduction of new equipment, consumables or new tests.
