Job summary

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant in Cellular Pathology to join a busy, well‑equipped department. The post involves delivering high‑quality diagnostic pathology and leading training for junior staff.

The successful candidate will hold GMC registration with eligibility for the Specialist Register, and may have CCT or be near completion. Subspecialty interests such as hematopathology, gynecological, uropathology or GI pathology are welcomed and supported.

Qualifications

• Fully registered with the GMC and eligible for Consultant appointment.
• CCT or equivalent; or be within 6 months of CCT at interview and GMC Specialist Register application in progress.
• FRCPath (UK) or equivalent is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Join an existing team of senior staff and Cabinets in delivering high‑quality cellular pathology services.
• Lead training and supervision for junior colleagues and multi‑professional teams.
• Contribute to service improvements, audits and clinical governance.
• Be flexible to work across Trust sites as required by the Clinical Lead.

Consultant in Cellular Pathology

The department has UKAS accreditation to ISO151589:2022. It processes and reports, per year, approximately 23,000 surgical specimens (approximately 18,000 for the NHS with 16% from general practitioners), 1200 diagnostic cytopathology specimens and 1000 semenology samples.

Main duties of the job

The laboratory was designed in collaboration with the staff and has modern equipment including height adjustable dissection benches and a recently introduced Sakura Tissue‑Tek Prisma Plus automated slide stainer and coverslipper, and a Dako Omnis immunohistochemistry immunostainer. Another similar immunostainer is being brought in to meet the increasing demands of immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology. The laboratory currently operates with two digital scanners which are used on a daily basis.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Fully registered with the GMC
• CCT (or equivalent for non-UK applicants of equivalent status), or be accredited (or equivalent), and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the specialty appropriate for this consultant post at the time of taking up the consultant appointment. Alternatively, candidates can hold or be within 6 months of their CCT at interview or have applied to be on the GMC Specialist register via CESR.
• FRCPath (UK) or equivalent

Clinical Experience

• Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
• Expertise in full range of Cellular Pathology workload
• Ability to lead a multi‑professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
• Sub‑speciality interests will be supported. The department is particularly interested in pathologists practising hematopathology, gynaecological Pathology, uropathology and GI pathology.

Management Administration

• Demonstrable ability to manage priorities
• Demonstrable multi-disciplinary team leadership skills
• Evidence of participation in audit and understanding basic principles of management
• Flexible approach to work organisation
• Evidence of management/leadership skills training
• Intermediate to Advanced level IT skills

Teaching & Research

• Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees, laboratory staff and multi disciplinary teams
• Interest in leading multi‑professional education
• Publications in peer reviewed journals is desirable
