Job description

We have been assigned by one of the UK's most prestigious NHS Trusts to help recruit a Consultant in Histopathology on either a Substantive or NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Histopathology department.

Department and Services

The appointee will join a department specializing in services including cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care, and paediatric intensive care. The department is recognized for expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and liver condition management. The cellular pathology processes over 65,000 surgical cases, 5,500 non-gynaecological cytology cases, and 1,000 post-mortems annually, mostly for HM Coroner. The laboratory is modern, well-equipped, and offers facilities for immunohistochemistry, rapid processing, FISH, and molecular services.

Role and Responsibilities

The successful appointee will join a team of 16 Consultant Histopathologists and 3 specialty doctors to develop the North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service (NMCPS). Responsibilities include:

  1. Active involvement in training junior medical staff and Laboratory Scientific staff.
  2. Participation in undergraduate medical student teaching.
  3. Engagement in job planning, medical audits, and annual appraisals.
  4. Participation in professional audits, CPD, and quality assurance programs.
  5. Providing diagnostic and consultative services to the NMCPS, including hospitals and wider service users.
  6. Developing subspecialist reporting in one to three cellular pathology disciplines to complement existing consultants.
