Job summary

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is seeking a consultant hepatology with involvement in endoscopy and multidisciplinary care. You will manage inpatients and outpatients, lead a team, participate in governance and audit, and contribute to teaching and research.

The role includes opportunities to engage with new endoscopy units and JAG courses, with duties across the LRI and community settings as the department expands.

Qualifications

  • MB BS or Equivalent required.
  • Full GMC Registration via CCT or CESR within 6 months of interview.
  • MRCP/MRCS or Equivalent required.
  • Current BLS Certification required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Tasks

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients.
  • To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
  • Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff
  • To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
  • Teaching, research and administration.
  • To proactively develop the service.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Participation on a rotational ward cover for between 21-24 inpatient hepatology beds across two wards at the LRI
  • General hepatology outpatient clinics within UHL +/- UHL in the Community,
  • Endoscopy sessions across UHL +/- UHL in the Community. Opportunity for flexible working including weekend endoscopy sessions
  • There are opportunities to participate in the endoscopy training academy as well as becoming a faculty member for JAG courses run at UHL.

We have had significant national investment with a new 2 roomed endoscopy unit opening at Hinckley Hospital (CDC) in June 2025. In October 2025 we will open a new Endoscopy Unit at the LGH site which will comprise of 6 procedure rooms. The unit will have excellent training facilities with SMOTS installed in three procedure rooms linking to a large seminar room which will facilitate the wide range of JAG courses the department run.

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration via one of the following routes - Fully Accredited (CCT) or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date. - Certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (CESR)
  • MRCP/MRCS or Equivalent
  • Current BLS Certification
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
Management
Essential criteria
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors.
  • Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles.
  • Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload.
  • Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS.
  • Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills).
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance issues.

  • Demonstrates clear, logical thinking / analytical approach.
Desirable criteria
  • Post CCT fellowship in hepatology
  • Trained in fibroscan
  • Advanced training programme in hepatology
  • Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.
Audit / Quality Improvement
Essential criteria
  • Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit
  • Participation in a quality improvement programmeExperience of quality improvement work and audit
Desirable criteria
  • Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence
  • Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement.
  • Published Audit including quality improvement.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Please note if you are successful in obtaining this position and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check. The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment. The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
