Locum Appointment for Training: Senior Clinical Fellow in Remote and Rural Anaesthesia, Lerwick

Job Details:

  • Position: Anaesthetic Locum Appointment for training post in Remote and Rural Anaesthesia (Ref: 213730)
  • Duration: Fixed term from February 2026 for 6 months
  • Hours: Full Time – 40 hours per week
  • Location: Gilbert Bain Hospital, The Shetland Islands, 100 miles north of the Scottish mainland
  • Allowance: Distant Island Allowance of £2,380 per annum (pro rata)
Application Details:

Applications are invited for this unique and exciting training post suitable for those at ST6/ST7 stage of anaesthetic training, considering work in remote parts of the UK, and seeking broad experience in a senior generalist role before becoming a consultant.

The post is recognized by The Royal College of Anaesthetists for advanced training in Anaesthesia. Responsibilities include elective and emergency anaesthetic and critical care services for all age groups, with support from hospital teams, Scottish retrieval services, and mainland colleagues. There are also opportunities for non-clinical work, hospital management involvement, and contribution to training programs.

Candidate Requirements:
  • MBChB or recognized equivalent
  • FRCA or recognized equivalent
  • Currently in a Type I training post
  • Hold a National/Visiting Training Number
  • In ST6 or ST7 at the start of the post
