An exciting opportunity awaits in a unique Anaesthetic Locum Training Post focused on Remote and Rural Anaesthesia. Fixed term from February 2026 for 6 months
Full Time – 40 hours per week
Salary Range £45,504 - £71,550 per annum (pro rata)
Distant Island Allowance of £2,380 per annum (pro rata)
Applications are invited for a unique and exciting Anaesthetic Locum Training Post in Remote and Rural Anaesthesia. The post offers experience in a remote island hospital and is suitable for those at ST6/ST7 stage of anaesthetic training, interested in working in remote parts of the UK and gaining broad experience in a senior generalist role before becoming a consultant.
The post is recognized by The Royal College of Anaesthetists for advanced training in Anaesthesia and is based at Gilbert Bain Hospital in the Shetland Islands, 100 miles north of the Scottish mainland.
Appointees will participate in elective and emergency anaesthetic and critical care services for all age groups, supported by hospital teams, Scottish retrieval services, and mainland colleagues. There will also be opportunities to engage in non-clinical hospital management and contribute to training at various levels.
The post will commence around February 2026 for 6 months, tailored to the individual’s circumstances.

Applicants must hold an MBChB or equivalent, FRCA or equivalent, currently be in a Type I training post, hold a National/Visiting Training Number, and be in ST6 or ST7 at the start of the post.
