Job summary

Jane Street is seeking Linux Engineers to join the team maintaining its critical infrastructure that underpins the firm's technology. The role covers a broad range of areas from the physical hardware to workload orchestration, with opportunities to dive deep in a few areas.

The team builds in-house tools and integrates open-source technologies to feel native to our infrastructure, while mentoring others and improving automation and reliability in production environments.

Qualifications

• Knowledgeable about operating system fundamentals, computer architecture, and systems programming concepts like sockets, virtual memory, and the process life cycle.
• Able to understand network protocols at a basic level.
• Comfortable at the command line of a Linux machine and fluent in introspection and troubleshooting: system health, processes, logs.
• Someone who solves problems by writing code and cares about robust software engineering.
• Intellectually curious, collaborative, humble, and eager to learn (including from mistakes).

Responsibilities

• Building the in-house tools and systems that make up our platform, or integrating mainstream open-source technologies so they feel native to our infrastructure
• Acting as one of the firm's Linux experts, and teaching other engineers specialized skills
• Automating our own work to improve speed and reliability
• Diagnosing and resolving production issues in real time under time pressure
• Carrying out scheduled changes to the platform, like upgrades, migrations, capacity changes, and rollouts
