Job summary

HDI Global SE is seeking an experienced Liability Underwriter to join our UK & London market team. You will underwrite risks, engage brokers and clients, and help deliver HDI’s business plans with a proactive, collaborative mindset.

The role requires strong analytical ability, relationship-building, and the drive to improve processes while complying with internal guidelines and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

  • Prior liability underwriting experience within a corporate/insurer setting.
  • Knowledge of multinational programmes is desirable.
  • Ability to read underwriting files and extract required data for regulatory purposes.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills with brokers and clients.
  • Capable of building/maintaining relationships with internal/external stakeholders.
  • Able to evaluate information from diverse sources and solve problems.
  • Maintains accurate, orderly files for auditing and regulatory needs.
  • Proactive, adaptable mindset with a willingness to embrace change.

Responsibilities

  • Actively engage with brokers and clients in the UK & London markets.
  • Represent HDI at external networking events and promote the brand.
  • Underwrite individual risks, gather background data and determine premiums.
  • Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of new business.
  • Enter data into systems and produce management reports on risks.
  • Collaborate with partners to deliver HDI’s product and proposition.
  • Identify bottlenecks and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Comply with HDI-UK & Ireland policies, guidelines, and authority.
  • Participate in internal forums, committees and projects.
  • Contribute to initiatives to enhance team effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Undertake other tasks to help the team achieve objectives.

Job description

HDI is a Corporate & Specialty Insurer part of the Talanx Group. With over 120 years of experience, HDI operates across five continents, around 40 countries and employs over 5,000 people worldwide.

The role:
  • To carefully select and underwrite risks, in accordance with authority level and under the direction of superiors.
  • Work in collaboration with colleagues to positively contribute to the successful delivery of the team’s business plans and goals.
  • Undertake project work with minimal supervision and lead projects where appropriate.
Key accountabilities:
  • Actively engage with brokers and clients in the UK & London markets to promote HDI as an insurer of choice and build close and trusted relationships with key broker and client partners.
  • Represent HDI at external networking events and enhance and promote the HDI brand and proposition.
  • Underwrite individual risks, responding to insurance proposals, gathering background information, assessing the risk considering exposure, attachment point, loss history and terms and conditions and determining appropriate insurance premiums using actuarial information, other statistics and own judgement, within own authority level, making necessary referrals in accordance with company policy.
  • Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of new business including up-sell and cross‑sell opportunities.
  • Accurately enter data into company systems and produce management reports that ensure that the company remains aware of the nature and financial impact of risks written.
  • Work collaboratively with business partners (customers, claims, risk consulting, Head Office, finance, network, policy wordings, compliance and other Product Lines) and colleagues to successfully deliver HDI’s product and proposition.
  • Analyse existing processes to identify potential bottlenecks, improvement opportunities and risks, as well as deriving appropriate measures for process optimization.
  • Comply with HDI-UK & Ireland branch and Global policies, underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority.
  • Represent the Team and actively participate on internal Branch and Head office sponsored forums, committees and projects.
  • Proactively participate in projects or other initiatives designed to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of the Team and / or Branch.
  • Undertake any other tasks as requested by the management team, in order that the team achieve its objectives.
Skills & experience:
  • Prior experience gained within a Liability Underwriting role.
  • Knowledge of Multinational Programmes is desirable, not essential.
  • Has good technical understanding about underwriting policy construction; able to read underwriting files and understand what data needs to be captured for regulatory and analytical purposes.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable with phone & face to face discussions with underwriters, brokers & other technical colleagues; confident in negotiation and networking scenarios.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and external clients.
  • Ability to evaluate information from a variety of sources and solve problems effectively
  • Ability to maintain accurate, orderly and methodical files that meet auditing and regulatory environments showing accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Has a positive and proactive mindset and a willingness to embrace change.
  • Shows innovation and creative problem solving skills.
  • Ability to organize own workload effectively to meet service standards.
  • Ability to work under pressure to deliver to tight deadlines when required.
