Job summary

Millbrook Primary School & Nursery is seeking a dedicated Level 2 Teaching Assistant on maternity cover to join the Year 1 team. The role focuses on supporting early reading skills, phonics development, and smooth transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1.

You will work under the guidance of the class teacher, providing targeted literacy and numeracy support, and helping maintain an inclusive, caring classroom environment. A DBS check is required.

Qualifications

• Has a Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification and GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C/4 or above.
• Experience supporting primary-aged children is desirable.
• Understanding of early reading, phonics, and Read Write Inc (RWI) is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Support the class teacher in delivering high-quality teaching and learning within the Year 1 curriculum.
• Provide targeted phonics support through small group and individual interventions.
• Assist in delivering Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics sessions.
• Help children develop foundational skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
• Promote confidence, wellbeing and engagement in learning.
• Observe and provide feedback on progress to the class teacher.
• Support pupils with differing needs to access the curriculum.
• Maintain a safe, positive, inclusive classroom environment.
• Contribute to wider school life and collaborate with colleagues and families.

Job description

Contract Type: Fixed Term (Maternity Cover), Term Time Only

Working Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 28.75 hours per week (9.00am – 3.30pm)

Start Date: As soon as possible

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Level 2 Teaching Assistant to join our Year 1 team on a maternity cover basis. This is an exciting opportunity to support children as they build upon the strong foundations established in Early Years and make a successful transition into Key Stage 1. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on developing children's early reading skills through phonics, strengthening foundational knowledge, and helping pupils become confident, independent learners.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support the class teacher in delivering high-quality teaching and learning experiences within the Year 1 curriculum.


• Provide targeted support for children in phonics sessions, including small group and individual interventions.


• Support the delivery of the school's chosen phonics programme, Read Write Inc. (RWI).


• Help children develop and secure key foundational skills in reading, writing and mathematics.


• Promote children's confidence, independence, wellbeing and engagement in learning.


• Observe and provide feedback on children's progress to the class teacher.


• Support pupils with differing needs to access the curriculum effectively.


• Help maintain a safe, positive and inclusive classroom environment.


• Contribute to wider school life and work collaboratively with colleagues and families.

Qualifications and Experience:

• A relevant Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).


• A good standard of education, including GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).


• Experience of working with primary-aged children, preferably within a school setting, is desirable.


• An understanding of early reading development and phonics is desirable.


• Experience of, or familiarity with, Read Write Inc. (RWI) would be advantageous.


• A commitment to ongoing professional development.
