Job summary

Harper May Limited in London is seeking an experienced Legal Biller to join the finance team. You will manage the billing cycle from pro forma to payment, ensuring accuracy and timeliness for high-value disputes and international clients.

You will prepare pro forma and final bills, review time entries, submit LEDES invoices, monitor WIP, and chase outstanding items. A calm, organised approach is essential.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a legal biller in a law firm.

• Knowledge of SRA Accounts Rules as they apply to billing.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and issue pro forma and final bills for partners and fee earners.
• Review time entries and disbursements against client billing guidelines and engagement terms.
• Submit invoices through client e-billing portals, including LEDES format.
• Monitor work in progress and unbilled time, and prompt fee earners to bill on schedule.
• Allocate client receipts and keep matter balances and client ledgers accurate.
• Chase outstanding invoices with fee earners and clients, and report on aged debt.
• Support month-end with billing and WIP reporting for the finance team.
• Cover accounts payable and other transactional tasks during holidays.

Job description

An international law firm is looking for an experienced Legal Biller to join its London finance team. The firm acts for clients on complex, high-value disputes and transactions, and its partners work for a demanding international client base where accurate, timely billing matters to everyone. The London office is around 90 people, so you will know the partners and fee earners you work with by name, and your work will be visible and valued. This is a role for a biller who takes pride in getting invoices out right first time, and who is happy to own the process from pro forma to payment.

The Role

Working closely with partners, fee earners and the wider finance team, you will run the London billing cycle end to end.

• Prepare and issue pro forma and final bills for partners and fee earners
• Review time entries and disbursements against client billing guidelines and engagement terms
• Submit invoices through client e-billing portals, including LEDES format, and resolve any rejections
• Monitor work in progress and unbilled time, and prompt fee earners to bill on schedule
• Allocate client receipts and keep matter balances and client ledgers accurate
• Chase outstanding invoices with fee earners and clients, and report on aged debt
• Support month-end with billing and WIP reporting for the finance team
• Cover accounts payable and other transactional tasks during holidays

Who we want to hear from

• Proven experience as a legal biller in a law firm, ideally an international firm
• Working knowledge of a legal practice management system such as Elite 3E, Aderant or similar
• Experience of client e-billing portals and detailed billing guidelines
• An understanding of the SRA Accounts Rules as they apply to billing and client money
• Accuracy and a calm, organised approach at month-end
• The confidence to work with partners and push back when a bill is not ready to go
