Job summary

Falmouth University is seeking a Lecturer to join the School of Architecture, Design & Interiors on a fixed-term, part-time basis. You will teach and mentor students in interior architecture and interior design, guiding them from concept to resolved spatial proposals using current design methods.

You will collaborate with colleagues across architecture and related disciplines, promote inclusive learning, and contribute to evolving curricula that emphasise contemporary practice, sustainability

Qualifications

• Experience teaching in higher education or professional practice in interior architecture or interior design.
• Ability to translate concepts into studio-based learning and visual/technical representations.
• Engagement with contemporary design discourse and social/environmental considerations.

Responsibilities

• Teach Interior Architecture & Interior Design within the School of Architecture, Design & Interiors.

About The Role

Our Interior Architecture & Interior Design courses bring together spatial thinking, material experimentation, technology, culture and social and environmental responsibility, giving students the opportunity to question how spaces are designed and experienced.

As a Lecturer you’ll join a forward-thinking and supportive creative community within the School of Architecture, Design & Interiors, working alongside colleagues across architecture, spatial design and related disciplines. Our students are ambitious, curious and willing to challenge conventions, and we encourage them to develop distinctive design voices while engaging critically with the complex social, cultural and environmental issues shaping the built environment.

The course is evolving rapidly, with an exciting focus on contemporary practice, emerging technologies, sustainable approaches and socially engaged design. You’ll play a key role in shaping this development, bringing your own expertise and perspective to teaching while helping students connect creative ideas with rigorous design thinking and professional practice.

Our industry-standard workshops, digital fabrication facilities, specialist studios and digital technologies provide an excellent environment for experimentation and making. About You

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and forward-thinking designer and educator with experience of teaching in higher education and/or professional practice in interior architecture, interior design or a closely related discipline. You’ll be passionate about helping students develop their own creative voice, while encouraging them to question established approaches and engage critically with the social, cultural, environmental and technological challenges shaping contemporary spatial practice.

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

• Comprehensive and current knowledge of interior architecture and interior design, with an understanding of contemporary approaches to spatial practice, materiality, sustainability and the relationship between people, place and environment.
• Strong design development and communication skills, with the ability to support students in translating conceptual ideas into resolved spatial proposals through appropriate visual, technical and material methods.
• Experience of contemporary digital and/or analogue design processes, including relevant technologies, representation techniques, fabrication or making, and an enthusiasm for emerging approaches to spatial design.
• Evidence of engagement with professional, research or creative practice, demonstrating an active interest in the development of the discipline and the ability to bring relevant contemporary perspectives into teaching.

You’ll be comfortable working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary academic team and supporting students with different backgrounds, experiences and levels of confidence. Most importantly, you’ll be curious, generous with your knowledge and committed to creating an ambitious and inclusive learning environment in which students can take creative risks and develop as independent designers.

This position is offered on a fixed-term for 12 months, part-time, 21 hours per week basis, in person on our Falmouth campus. The exact working pattern is to be agreed with the successful candidate.
