Job summary

Merstone School in Solihull is seeking Learning Support Assistants to assist with education, care and medical needs for pupils aged 2-19 with severe and complex learning disabilities. The role requires a Level 3 childcare qualification and strong literacy/numeracy skills, with training provided for medical care duties.

Contract is permanent, part-time 32.5 hours weekly during 39 weeks per year, starting November 2026.

Qualifications

• NNEB / NVQ 3 / BTEC or Level 3 childcare qualification required.
• GCSE Maths & English passes or equivalent literacy/numeracy skills.
• Experience working with pupils with additional needs is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Support pupils' education, care and medical needs on a day-to-day basis.
• Work with school nurses and professionals to adapt care plans.
• Provide Personal and Medical Care Support as required.

Learning Support Assistants to include Personal and Medical Care Support (Permanent)

Salary: Band C - £26,824 - £29,540 (pro-rata) £20,198 - £22,244 (Actual Salary) (This is subject to qualifications and experience)

Working Pattern: Monday – Friday, 8.45am – 3.45pm, 32.5 hours per week, 39 weeks per year

Start date: November 2026

Governors are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and experienced Learning Support Assistants, SEN and ASD experience would be desirable. The role will entail supporting pupil’s education, care and medical needs. Full training will be given to support pupils with medical care needs, but some healthcare or medical care experience would be desirable.

Essential/ Desirable:

• NNEB/ NVQ 3 /BTEC or other relevant Level 3 childcare qualification essential
• GCSE Maths & English Pass or Reading & Writing Skills and Numeracy Skills NVQ Level 2 essential
• Ability to work positively with parents, school nurses and other professionals to improve the support for pupils essential
• SEN experience, ASD experience and positive behaviour management expertise desirable
• Recent experience of working with children in a learning environment desirable
• Medical care experience desirable
• Basic knowledge of First Aid desirable
