Teaching Assistant – SEMH Support
Location: Sarisbury area | Contract: Full-Time, Term-Time Only | Start Date: September
Rate of Pay: £13.75 per hour (paid weekly)

A specialist all-boys secondary school in the Sarisbury area is seeking to appoint committed and empathetic Teaching Assistants to join its dedicated staff team from September. This rewarding opportunity offers the chance to support pupils with a wide range of Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, many of whom have experienced trauma, present with challenging behaviour, or face barriers to emotional regulation and engagement in mainstream education.

The school provides a structured and nurturing environment, underpinned by a highly personalised approach to learning. Students are supported to overcome individual challenges, develop self-regulation strategies, and progress both academically and socially. Staff play a pivotal role in fostering a safe, consistent, and respectful setting where each pupil can feel valued and empowered to achieve.

  • Deliver targeted academic and emotional support to pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small group settings

  • Assist teaching staff in promoting positive behaviour and maintaining a calm, inclusive classroom environment

  • Support pupils in building self-esteem, resilience, and constructive peer relationships

  • Follow individual support plans and behaviour management strategies, in collaboration with senior leaders and external professionals

  • Contribute to the planning and facilitation of bespoke learning activities tailored to each pupil’s needs

  • Supervise students during unstructured times such as transitions, breaks, and off-site activities as required

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of pupil progress, behaviour, and achievements

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people, ideally within an SEMH or additional needs context

  • A calm, consistent, and patient approach to behaviour support

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with both pupils and colleagues

  • An understanding of trauma-informed practice and the capacity to remain composed in challenging situations

  • A genuine commitment to supporting vulnerable young people to reach their full potential

All applicants must hold a Child Workforce Enhanced DBS Certificate registered on the Update Service, or be willing to obtain one at their own expense prior to starting the role.
