Job description

Position: Learning Mentor

Contract: Full-time Term Time Only

Key Stages: KS1 – KS4

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people?

Do you believe in the power of positive relationships to inspire learning?

At Compass School, we are a specialist Alternative Provision supporting pupils who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of exclusion, and those unable to consistently access mainstream education. We work with pupils across Key Stages 1–4, helping them overcome barriers and rediscover a love of learning.

Our trauma-informed, relational approach is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that by fostering trust, respect and understanding, we can create an environment where every pupil feels safe, valued and supported on their educational journey.

Purpose of the Role

Role

As a Learning Mentor, you will play a key role in helping our pupils thrive both inside and outside the classroom by:

  • Leading and coordinating enrichment activities.
  • Supporting pupils 1:1 and in small groups through bespoke interventions.
  • Promoting positive social, emotional and mental wellbeing.
  • Helping remove barriers to learning and raising aspirations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build trusting relationships with pupils, supporting their personal growth and confidence.
  • Deliver targeted interventions to improve pupils' wellbeing and engagement.
  • Provide high quality guidance on careers, education, training and employment.
  • Work collaboratively with parents/carers and other stakeholders to maximise pupil success.
  • Support pupils in overcoming attendance, behavioural, and emotional challenges.
  • Model restorative practice and promote an inclusive school ethos.
  • Lead learning-to-learn activities and enrichment programmes.
  • Monitor progress, contribute to individual learning plans and behaviour management strategies.
  • Ensure safe participation in offsite activities, completing risk assessments as required.
  • Provide welfare support, including first aid and support for personal or medical needs (with training).

Who We Are Looking For?

We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and motivated individual who:

  • Has experience working with young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.
  • Demonstrates excellent relationship-building skills and a trauma-informed approach.
  • Can deliver creative and engaging interventions tailored to individual needs.
  • Has a genuine passion for helping pupils overcome barriers and reach their potential.
  • Is a strong team player, ready to contribute to the wider school community.

Why Join Compass School?

  • Make a real difference to young lives.
  • Be part of a supportive, caring, and committed team.
  • Ongoing training and professional development.
  • Opportunities to innovate and shape bespoke interventions.
  • Work in a school that truly values positive relationships and individual growth.

If you believe every young person deserves the chance to succeed, we'd love to hear from you.
