We have an exciting new opportunity for a Learning Design Manager, this is a fundamental role in Yorkshire Water’s journey to becoming a learning organisation. You will help make learning a natural part of how work gets done by designing learning solutions that are accessible at the point of need, connected to real business challenges and focused on helping colleagues perform confidently, safely and effectively..….Could this be you?

What we do:

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry.

Where you fit in:

You will be responsible for leading the creation of engaging, performance-driving and solution-focused learning content that helps colleagues build the confidence, capability and competence. You will ensure learning is designed around clear outcomes, practical application and measurable improvement, not simply attendance or completion. You will help build capability for today while strengthening future skills, behaviours and mindset needed to deliver our strategy” A thriving Yorkshire that is right for customers and right for the environment”.

This role is all about understanding clearly defined business learning requirements and turning them into high-quality learning solutions, pathways and resources.

You will lead a team of four Learning Design Specialists, ensuring content is on brand, accessible, consistent, fit for purpose and designed to drive the intended performance outcomes across Yorkshire Water. It is key you foster a team culture of strong collaboration, creativity, continuous improvement and delivery discipline.

Some key role responsibilities include the following -

  • Provide leadership across learning design standards, content development, learning innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that learning content is professionally designed, aligned to Yorkshire Water’s brand, values and strategic priorities, and built around how colleagues learn and perform in real working environments.
  • Drive performance-focused learning design: Ensure learning solutions are built around measurable improvements in capability, confidence, compliance, customer service, safety, leadership, productivity or operational performance, rather than simply creating courses or content.
  • Stay abreast of developments in learning design, digital learning, AI-enabled learning, microlearning, immersive learning, social learning and evidence-based practice, using this insight to continuously improve Yorkshire Water’s learning offer.

What skills & qualifications are we looking for?

The role requires strong design expertise, creative thinking, stakeholder confidence and people leadership. It must balance immediate content development needs with the longer-term shift towards becoming a learning organisation, helping move learning away from over-reliance on classroom-based training and towards learning in the flow of work, just-in-time resources, digital learning, coaching support, performance tools and blended solutions.

  • You will be able to translate complex business, technical or operational information into clear, engaging and accessible learning content.
  • We are therefore looking for previous experience of designing learning content, pathways or blended interventions that improve capability, confidence and performance.
  • A strong understanding of learning design principles, adult learning, learning needs analysis, evaluation and continuous improvement.
  • You will have previous experience of leading, coaching or managing learning professionals, designers or specialist teams.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to challenge briefs, shape solutions and influence design decisions.
  • Experience of using digital learning tools, authoring platforms or learning technologies to create effective learning experiences.
  • Strong written communication, storytelling and content development skills.
  • Ability to use data, learner feedback and performance insight to improve content quality and assess impact.
  • Commitment to inclusive, accessible and engaging learning design that supports a diverse workforce.

It would be beneficial if you had the following –

  • Experience of working in a regulated, operational, utilities or safety-critical environment.
  • Experience of designing microlearning, digital learning, performance support tools, learning pathways or just-in-time resources.
  • Experience of content governance, version control, brand standards or learning quality assurance.
  • Experience of working with subject matter experts to turn technical knowledge into practical learning resources.
  • Relevant learning, instructional design, digital learning, CIPD, coaching, OD or leadership qualification.

Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it’s really important to us that we support flexible working patterns and job share options (when we can), to help you make the best of both your work and home life. We know that juggling childcare responsibilities or getting that ideal work/life balance isn’t always easy!

Do we sound like your cup of tea?

Recruitment Process –
