Job summary

Circle Health Group's Bishops Wood Hospital in Middlesex seeks a Lead Theatre Practitioner for a 12-month fixed term. You will lead the perioperative team, ensuring patient-centred care, surgical safety, and clinical governance across scrub, recovery, or anaesthetics as appropriate.

This role is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, with a flexible shift pattern. You will mentor junior staff, drive competency development, and uphold standards within a multidisciplinary private healthcare setting.

Qualifications

  • Registered practitioner with theatre experience across scrub, recovery or anaesthetics.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership and role-modeling for peers.
  • Extended theatre experience as a senior practitioner essential.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety, safeguarding, infection control and governance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred perioperative care across the pathway as a specialist or lead.
  • Ensure all patient safety checks and WHO surgical safety processes are carried out per policy.
  • Maintain credibility by modelling best practice and leading in high-risk situations.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for theatre practitioners and support staff.
  • Support development and assessment of competencies within the team and CPD.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff, including students and newly qualified members.

This is a full-time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern.

Duties Of This Role Include
  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the perioperative pathway, acting as a specialist or functional lead within the team.
  • Ensure that all patient safety checks, including WHO surgical safety processes, are carried out in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintain clinical credibility by demonstrating best practice, supporting others, and taking the lead in complex or high-risk situations.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for theatre practitioners and support staff, fostering a culture of professionalism, compassion, and accountability.
  • Support the development and assessment of competencies within the team, promoting continuous professional development.
  • Actively mentor and coach junior staff, including students and newly qualified team members.
Applicants Should Meet The Following Criteria
  • NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with significant experience in a theatre environment (e.g. scrub, recovery, or anaesthetics).
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and ability to act as a role model to peers.
  • Extended theatre experience as a senior theatre practitioner essential.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety protocols, safeguarding, infection control, and clinical governance.
  • Scrub Practitioner or Surgical First Assistant qualification [for scrub leads].
  • ENB 998 and/or mentorship course.
  • Approved / recognised anaesthetic course.
  • ILS.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and mentoring skills.
  • Commitment to personal development and supporting the development of others.
  • Specialist training in a defined clinical area (e.g. orthopaedics, robotics, cardiac, major surgery).
  • Experience in leading audits, service improvement projects, or clinical teaching.
  • Previous experience working within the independent healthcare sector or multidisciplinary surgical teams.
  • Familiarity with theatre scheduling systems and electronic patient records.
