Job summary

The Blackheath Hospital in London, part of Circle Health Group, is hiring a Lead Theatre Practitioner to oversee anaesthetics/recovery. The role is a full-time, 37.5-hour position with a flexible shift pattern and a salary up to £55,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

You will lead delivery of high-quality perioperative care, ensure patient safety, and mentor staff while promoting continuous professional development within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Must be an NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with significant theatre experience.
  • Scrub lead or Surgical First Assistant qualification is desirable.
  • Enrolled/holding ENB 998 and/or mentorship and approved anaesthetic courses.
  • ILs and safeguarding, infection control, and governance knowledge required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred perioperative care across the theatre pathway.
  • Ensure patient safety checks and WHO surgical safety processes are followed.
  • Provide clinical leadership and act as a role model to peers.
  • Supervise theatre practitioners and support staff, fostering professionalism and accountability.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff and students; support CPD and development.

Lead Theatre Practitioner - Anaesthetics/Recovery

The Blackheath Hospital 37.5 Hours & Permanent Salary: Up to £55,000.00 per year (depending on level of experience, training and qualification)

The Blackheath Hospital in London is part of Circle Health Group, Britain's leading provider of independent healthcare with a nationwide network of hospitals & clinics, performing more complex surgery than any other private healthcare provider in the country.

We have an opportunity for a Lead Theatre Practitioner to join their team of staff in the Theatres department. This is a full time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern.

Duties of this role include:
  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the perioperative pathway, acting as a specialist or functional lead within the team.
  • Ensure that all patient safety checks, including WHO surgical safety processes, are carried out in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintain clinical credibility by demonstrating best practice, supporting others, and taking the lead in complex or high‑risk situations.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for theatre practitioners and support staff, fostering a culture of professionalism, compassion, and accountability.
  • Support the development and assessment of competencies within the team, promoting continuous professional development.
  • Actively mentor and coach junior staff, including students and newly qualified team members.
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
  • NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with significant experience in a theatre environment (e.g. scrub, recovery, or anaesthetics).
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and ability to act as a role model to peers.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety protocols, safeguarding, infection control, and clinical governance.
  • Scrub Practitioner or Surgical First Assistant qualification [for scrub leads].
  • ENB 998 and/or mentorship course.
  • Approved / recognised anaesthetic course.
  • ILS.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and mentoring skills.
  • Commitment to personal development and supporting the development of others.
  • Specialist training in a defined clinical area (e.g. orthopaedics, robotics, cardiac, major surgery).
  • Experience in leading audits, service improvement projects, or clinical teaching.
  • Previous experience working within the independent healthcare sector or multidisciplinary surgical teams.
  • Familiarity with theatre scheduling systems and electronic patient records.
