Job summary

Circle Health Group is recruiting a Lead Theatre Practitioner for a 12-month fixed-term contract at Bishops Wood Hospital. The role is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, with a flexible shift pattern and a salary of up to £52,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

You will lead the perioperative team, ensure patient safety checks, and mentor junior staff while upholding professional standards within Circle Health Group's theatre department.

Qualifications

  • NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with significant theatre experience.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and ability to act as a role model.
  • Extended theatre experience as a senior theatre practitioner essential.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety protocols, safeguarding, infection control.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the perioperative pathway.
  • Ensure WHO surgical safety checks are carried out per policy.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for theatre staff.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff and newly qualified team members.

Bishops Wood Hospital in Middlesex is part of Circle Health Group, Britain's leading provider of independent healthcare with a nationwide network of hospitals & clinics, performing more complex surgery than any other private healthcare provider in the country.

We have an opportunity for a Lead Theatre Practitioner to join their team of staff in the Theatre department.

This is a full-time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required tocover a flexible shift pattern.

Duties of this role include:

  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the perioperative pathway, acting as a specialist or functional lead within the team.
  • Ensure that all patient safety checks, including WHO surgical safety processes, are carried out in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintain clinical credibility by demonstrating best practice, supporting others, and taking the lead in complex or high-risk situations.
  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership and supervision for theatre practitioners and support staff, fostering a culture of professionalism, compassion, and accountability.
  • Support the development and assessment of competencies within the team, promoting continuous professional development.
  • Actively mentor and coach junior staff, including students and newly qualified team members.

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with significant experience in a theatre environment (e.g. scrub, recovery, or anaesthetics).
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and ability to act as a role model to peers.
  • Extended theatre experience as a senior theatre practitioner essential.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety protocols, safeguarding, infection control, and clinical governance.
  • Scrub Practitioner or Surgical First Assistant qualification [for scrub leads].
  • ENB 998 and/or mentorship course.
  • Approved / recognised anaesthetic course.
  • ILS.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and mentoring skills.
  • Commitment to personal development and supporting the development of others.
  • Specialist training in a defined clinical area (e.g. orthopaedics, robotics, cardiac, major surgery).
  • Experience in leading audits, service improvement projects, or clinical teaching.
  • Previous experience working within the independent healthcare sector or multidisciplinary surgical teams.
  • Familiarity with theatre scheduling systems and electronic patient records.
