Job summary

Circle Health Group is seeking a Lead Theatre Practitioner at Hendon Hospital. The role covers 37.5 hours per week with a flexible shift pattern, focusing on leading perioperative care and maintaining safety standards across the theatre team.

You will mentor staff, ensure patient safety checks, and support competency development while delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care within a multidisciplinary environment. Experience in independent healthcare is preferred.

Qualifications

  • NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with theatre experience.
  • Clinical leadership experience and ability to role model peers.
  • Understanding of patient safety, infection control and governance.
  • Defined clinical area specialist training (e.g., orthopaedics).

Responsibilities

  • Lead delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centred perioperative care.
  • Ensure WHO safety checks are carried out per policy.
  • Mentor, supervise theatre staff and foster professionalism.
  • Develop and assess team competencies; support CPD.
  • Lead audits, service improvement and clinical teaching.

Lead Theatre Practitioner
Hendon Hospital
37.5 Hours & Permanent
Salary: Up to £46,550.00 per year
(depending on level of experience, training and qualification)

We have an opportunity for a Lead Theatre Practitioner to join their team of staff in the Theatres department.

This is a full-time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern.

Duties of this role include:
  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the perioperative pathway, acting as a specialist or functional lead within the team.
  • Ensure that all patient safety checks, including WHO surgical safety processes, are carried out in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintain clinical credibility by demonstrating best practice, supporting others, and taking the lead in complex or high-risk situations.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for theatre practitioners and support staff, fostering a culture of professionalism, compassion, and accountability.
  • Support the development and assessment of competencies within the team, promoting continuous professional development.
  • Actively mentor and coach junior staff, including students and newly qualified team members.
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
  • NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with significant experience in a theatre environment (e.g. scrub, recovery, or anaesthetics).
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and ability to act as a role model to peers.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety protocols, safeguarding, infection control, and clinical governance.
  • Scrub Practitioner or Surgical First Assistant qualification [for scrub leads].
  • ENB 998 and/or mentorship course.
  • Approved / recognised anaesthetic course.
  • ILS.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and mentoring skills.
  • Commitment to personal development and supporting the development of others.
  • Specialist training in a defined clinical area (e.g. orthopaedics, robotics, cardiac, major surgery).
  • Experience in leading audits, service improvement projects, or clinical teaching.
  • Previous experience working within the independent healthcare sector or multidisciplinary surgical teams.
  • Familiarity with theatre scheduling systems and electronic patient records.
