Job summary

Thorn Baker Group in Bedfordshire is seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead design activities on a major steel frame project (£500 million). This on-site, full-time role offers a chance to drive design across disciplines and ensure delivery to programme and budget.

The role requires at least five years of design management experience in steel frame construction, collaboration with PMs, engineers and architects, and a solid understanding of UK building regulations and health & safety.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture or related discipline.
• Chartered status or working towards chartership with a recognised professional body is preferred.
• At least five years’ experience managing design within the construction industry, specifically on steel frame projects (Commercial or Industrial, not residential).
• Proven track record on large-scale construction projects, ideally exceeding £100 million in value.

Responsibilities

• Manage and coordinate the design process across all disciplines, ensuring alignment with project objectives, timelines and budget.
• Lead the development, review and approval of design documentation related to steel frame structures.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, architects and subcontractors to resolve design issues and implement effective solutions.
