Job summary

Thorn Baker Construction is seeking an experienced Design Manager for a major on-site role in Bedfordshire. You will lead design activities for a £500 million steel frame project, coordinating across engineers, architects, and subcontractors to ensure design alignment with objectives, timelines and budget.

The role requires a Civil/Structural/Architecture background with Chartered status preferred and extensive steel frame project experience.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture or a related discipline.
• Chartered status or working towards chartership with a recognised professional body is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage and coordinate the design process across all disciplines, ensuring alignment with project objectives, timelines and budget.
• Lead the development, review and approval of design documentation related to steel frame structures.
• Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, architects and subcontractors to resolve design issues and implement effective solutions.
• Ensure compliance with relevant building regulations, health and safety standards, and company policies throughout the design phase.
• Oversee design risk assessments and manage design changes proactively to mitigate potential impacts on the project.
• Facilitate design team meetings and maintain clear communication channels to support project delivery.
• Monitor and report on design progress, highlighting any deviations and recommending corrective actions.
• Support tender and procurement processes by providing accurate design input and technical expertise.
