Bauer Media Group in Manchester is building a new in‑house software engineering hub. You will lead a software squad, combining hands‑on coding with people leadership, guiding technical decisions, and aligning with product priorities.

You’ll work with the Director of Engineering to foster collaboration, drive continuous improvement, and build an inclusive culture where engineers thrive and deliver high‑quality, scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• Hands-on software engineering with depth across full-stack or backend.
• Core stack familiarity: Node/TypeScript, React, Java, AWS, Kubernetes, Kafka.
• Strong software architecture knowledge: microservices, APIs.
• Modern practices: CI/CD, containerisation, version control, testing, observability.
• Security best practices across the development lifecycle.
• Awareness of AI trends in engineering.

Responsibilities

• Grow your team: coach and develop engineers with regular 1:1s and growth plans.
• Contribute technically: write and review code; guide architecture.
• Drive delivery and planning: manage squad capacity; participate in roadmaps and sprints.
• Uphold engineering standards: define coding standards and review processes; manage tech debt.
• Ensure operational excellence: participate in on-call rotas; promote DevOps culture.
